![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I am replacing the seal for my oil pump shaft, while I doing a timing belt job. I planned on removing the pump to drive the seal out from the inside. First, is that even necessary? Can it be done with the pump in place? Second, I have removed the sprocket and three bolts around the pump perimeter. The pump won't budge and I don't want to break anything. Does anyone have any tips for removing the pump?

I rigged-up a puller on the shaft and pushed against the block nearby Its a machined fit between the block and pump and its fairly tight, plus a few mm's of depth, so it has to come straight out. Wait and see if somebody else who remembers more clearly than me concurs. I;ve only done one. Was probably drinking red wine by that stage in project.
I pried the seal out from the front, am pretty sure, similar to front main.
As you see, each of the three bolts has a blue maybe viton o-ring? And a large O ring seals the pump body to block.

When I did my oil pump I rigged up a homemade puller. just a strip of steel with 3 holes. One over the thread for the oil pump sprocket with a nut over the strip and two others for bolts & with the nuts under the strip; then just had to turn the nuts on the bolts and the pump slid out. It has an oil ring which should be changed at the same time.
Look carefully at the impeller on the pump when you pull the pump out because it will drop off at some point and you need to know which way to put it back.
It can be hard to line up the bolt holes when you put the pump back; I put in a couple of temporary studs to slide the pump over & in to ensure the alignement.

Ok, Morton has the right idea here.
I lightly tapped mine out with a rubber mallet.

after you get the pump out dont forget you will need the oil pump O ring I suggest to use some Dow Corning 111 silicone type non setting sealant, on the O ring.
Usually if you remove the oil pump gear to replace it, its a good idea to replace the oil pump radial seal and then clean out the pump and replace Oil pump O ring, this seals it against the block/girdle
Also use some STP oil treatment on the pump gears during reassembly, this will help them to keep a suction on the oil pickup, so you dont lose the prime for the oil feed.
