Post dropping auto tranny

after being away for a while i am going to start to drop my tranny at home and put it in for reconditioning as i have been quoted £650 for the rebuild and twice that for removal and installation i was wondering if anyone had any tips before i get started this weekend i have no worries about the timescale but as usual i am working to a limited budget. i will be posting the steps i take on the board as i go as a reference guide "hopefully" for others

questions
how high to get the car up?

advice on dropping the suspension?

any special tools i need to buy or hire?

many thanks

just dont hold me liable !! : )

Tranny drop isnt thaaaaat bad really. Just an awkward weight to handle. Get your self an extra floor jack to help you out. I found the height i had my car was just right. Too high and its hard to get the tranny down by yourself, too low and it just doesnt come out!
The engine will have to be tilted slightly as there isnt enough clearnce at the **** end of the tranny to clear the battery box when you slide it off the torque tube...which leads to another subject, may as well replace that as well if it is making any noise. its dirty, frustrating, and not the easist job but it can be done at home! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

i have got the car up on axel stands front and rear
taken off exhaust and heat shields
studied what needs to come off the box i.e wires cables tubes
sprayed al the bolts with w.d.40
loosed half shaft bolts
next stage is to lower the suspension which looks like a big job any advice on this subject would be a great help

I would make sure you have the jack stands well set up. It will take some good tugging on the tranny to pull it off! You dont want the car rocking and swaying above your head!
When you remove the bolts from the tranny/suspension lay them in a pattern so you knwo where the go back in....when you can reinstall them partially after the susepension and tranny are out. If i recall some are different lengths etc etc. It will just make it easier when you put it all back to gether. Also take a wire brush to the threads to clean them up. Odds are you will get a lot of dirt and crud stuck to them when they come out.
