Question Question, I just inherited a 1987 Porsche 928 S4

Everything seems great on the car except that the AC does not work. The rear blower works. I checked all the fuses. Does anyone have ideas of things I can check before having to take it into the shop. Thank you very much

Welcome to the Rennlist 928 Forum Troy.

Condolences on your loss, and congratulations on your gain.

First thing is to service the timing belt and water pump if you're not sure when last they were done. A T-belt failure is an expensive proposition on your model year 928.

We are fortunate to have several folks here with extensive AC experience. I'm sure you'll hear from them shortly.

Troy,

You may want to look up Dozman, as I can assure you from face-to-face meetings, he knows the AC systems, both in theory and specifically as it pertains to the 928. He may be your first point of contact as to diagnosing things.

Doz, I hope you don't mind me tooting your horn on this topic.

If you give me your email address, I'll send you a white paper on the 928 HVAC system. It's far too long to post here.

Too long? I'll bet you can shoehorn it into a post Wally, for the benefit of the Archives if nothing else.

Perhaps - but it is 16 pages, single spaced!

Wally-
In that case please e-mail it to me. I am planning to R&R as well as convert to 134a.
TIA

Just to give you an idea on the A/C before you read 16 pages.

1. Vacuum leaks are common in 928s so hopefully that is all you have wrong. My rear air was cold and my front air was hot - was a vacuum leak near the brake booster which was found with a mini-vac.

2. If both are hot then I would check the Compressor, etc.

It is much more complicated than I can understand or explain, so make sure you get a good 928 mechanic!

Good mechanics who understand the 928 HVAC system are in VERY short supply, which is why there is a 16-page tutorial on the subject.

Wally,
If you feel that...perhaps, there are to many requests for the 16 pager.
I would gladly, pay a fee for your accumulated knowledge, print costs, and effort.
But do put me on the list of recipients.
While Pattycakes and I were PARKED on that deer path known as I-40 in the fair state of OK I had time to disassemble the console switches, practice the harmonica, and kiss the A/C goodbye!
I think she 'leaked' and shut down. There was -no compressor/clutch lockup and I was only running it on low, but, you never know....
TIA
John S.

Wally,

I do enjoy the a/c work, and I am little knowledgable on the matter. But, as always I would like to get as much tutorial on this subject as I can. Can you send me an email of the write up, Thanks a million.

I will be humble and admit, I would like to learn as much as I can on the 928. I am willing to help the other shark owners near me with there a/c problems. We Appreciate your the support on oure cars.

Hi Wally;
PLEASE add me to the e-mail list too.

bbrewer@ev1.net

My current a/c problem is minor, but it seems over time in running the a/c system, it seems to warm-up a bit.
It's WAY down the list on my projects list, but on the list nonetheless.
Thanks.
