Default What size socket for our spark plugs?

What size socket fits our spark plugs?

I'm looking into a better way of removing and installing mine without using the stock tool.

Anybody?

13/16 can remember the metric conversion though.

Be careful you don't get the socket stuck down there. I buzzed mine down on a grinding wheel so it would fit down that long spark plug hole and come back out again easily.

It appears 13/16" is 20.6mm.....kind of a odd conversion?

I got tired of the stock tool as well...but then i modified it.

First glue that piece of rubber inside so it doesnt keep coming out..or getting stuck on the plug when you take the tool out of the hole.

Second. Cut the end of the factory tool off...at a length you want. Obvioulsy longer than the depth of the hole I ground the end a bit narrower so the nut i used would slip fit over the end. ...then weld a 15mm or nut size of your choice to the end. Stick a socket or wrench on the welded nut to use it! I like the articulating spring centering action of the stock tool.

I use a stock 13/16 spark plug socket with a 6" 'wobbly' snap on extention............works great on all holes.

I just use the one that came in my Craftsman 1/2" socket set. A little dielectric grease keeps the rubber piece from constantly pulling out of the socket.

This is the socket I bought! I'm going to check the fit with my spare covers but I think it will work just fine, and it has the rubber plug holder on the inside.

Tony, Heinrich and I had discussed doing exactly what you have done but I was going to weld a 3/8" drive socket to it instead of a nut.

Same here except since I had my cam covers powder coated, the socket doesn't want to come out cleanly - I have to use a pair of needle nose pliars to pull it out all the way. Looks like I need to dig out the belt sander. I've just been too lazy.

It fits the cam cover opening with almost and 1/8" gap all the way around, so even with my covers being stripped of paint I should be good to go with powder coated ones.

To keep the socket attached to the extension I use my proto extension with locking pin.

I have a Harbor Freight special plug wrench that I bought years ago, one with the extension captive in the socket so they don't come apart. It slips nicely down into the little wells on my S4, and indexes the new plug perfectly with the hole. It works easily on every cylinder except the one with the hood switch right in line.

I bought the wrench originally to go in the toolbox for the boat. Sold the boat, and only later discovered what a nice 928 tool it is.
