Back from the Bonneville 100
Hello All,
Well I'm back from the Bonneville 100. The race
was shortened due to the tragic death of Bud
Ridenour Jr. His '01 Corvette crashed at 210
mph and he died of severe chest trauma. The
engine ended up in the passenger seat, and parts
of the car were scattered for over a mile.
It really put a damper on things. Bud was well
known and liked in the open road racing community.
As for the 928 angle, 2 of us competed, Peter
Whelan with his wife Kelly as navigator, and
Dennis Kao, my navigator, and I. Both cars
finished the first leg of the 51 miles without
incidents. I was entered in the 140 mph class and
my car ran very well. In fact, I should have
entered the 145 or 150 class. I was able to hit
the 165 mph tech speed, even at the 4,500-6,500 ft
elevation. The handling was outstanding. I had
just put on new Koni externally adjustable shocks
and had the folks at DEVEK set up the suspension.
I must say they did a great job. The car would go
as fast as I dared push it through the corners.
Turns that I had estimated as 120, I was going
through at over 130 and still had room to go more.
The est. 140 mph turns I didn't even need to slow
down for. I finished the first leg with a 143.598
mph average (+3.598), and that was without pushing
that hard. The first leg is the harder of the
two, it's uphill, starting at 4,500 feet and
ending at 6,500. I wanted to see what the car
could do, then take it easy on the way back to hit
the 140 mph average. I was averaging 150 on the
straights, with a couple of runs over 160 where I
knew they had set up the check points.
These cars are amazing, my pretty much stock S4
(Konis and RMB) was able to run the 51 miles up
hill at 140-160+ mph, stay cool in 90+ degree
desert heat, and do so in comfort. I'll be
posting pictures and a more detailed write up on
my web site soon.
Also it was great to see Dave and Quinn there.

Drifting
It was great fun having 4 928's out on the Salt Flats for some pictures. (BTW George, got some good pictures, I'll e-mail them soon. Sorry I didn't get a chance to say goodby to you and Dennis. Are you going to be in Elko next month? My sunburn may have healed by then.)
If anyone else is interested in Open Road racing, our cars seem to be perfectly suited. A stock 928 is considerably better equipped than some of the dedicated racecars. (And can run faster!)
Overall a good weekend, though sobering. Our thoughts are with Bud's family and friends.

Dave,
I'll be running the Pony Express out of Battle
Mountain on July 28th, but not the Gambler Twin
50 in August. That's the same weekend as DEVEK
Days, so I'll be doing the Buttonwillow Raceway
event.
You interested in running the Pony Express? I
know Bill Ball (89 S4)was also planning to go.
