I have read all the stuff here and on some other sites about the merits of chips like autoauthority and such. I came away wth the opinion that (especially as a result of the dyno results) there was no reason for me to go this route. I see that there are several 'listers here who have installed various chips, and I am curious about the opinions of those people. If you had to do it over again would you? Anybody try one and go back to stock? If you have BTDT I am interested in your opinions as well as facts.
Thanks
Thanks
The '89 and up 928's do not show any real gains, as you saw on the dyno charts. The earlier cars DO show some worthwhile gains. I think Porsche likely "closed the gap" in their continuous improvement of the cars. 1989 saw a number of changes for the 928, I think this was just one of them.
I ran Autothority chips in my '86 944 Turbo. It made HUGE power, as 944T's are known to do, but it blew up a couple of times too. Investigation showed that while a reputable company, Autothority chips for the 951 were NOT well optomised for the car. They were WAY to rich in the midrange and way to lean on the top end. For that particular model car, there were much better chip choices than the big name one I chose.
I have resigned myself to the fact that short of a stroker, the only meaningful upgrade for our cars is a supercharger. Not trying to open another can of worms there
but NA cars are tough to cheaply hotrod, especially highly tuned ones made by Porsche.
Good Luck

As pointed out the "chips" do more for the 85-86 than any other . Why? that engine has no knock sensors so it is likely Porsche programmed less advance in order to be safe . The after market chips increase the spark advance for better acceleration . But the 87 and newer already have more advance and use the knock sensors to retard timing if detonation is occurring . Opinions about what the chips might do are ......opinions. The facts are represented by the numerous Dyno tests . Interesting to note that dynos are usually rather unemotional or ego involved in what they are doing .
