Post Alusil Repair Sleeves are available!

For those of you who have the need to repair one or two jugs on an otherwise good Alusil block...please see below. I found a link to a Kolbenschmidt e-mail address and as it turns out, the Alusil repair sleeves are available from Germany. These are shrink fit (heat block and chill sleeve) to the block, then the block is decked. I just thought this would be of use to a lot of you out there... In my opinion, this is a much better option to sleeving one jug with cast iron....yuck!

Dear Mr.Kuhn,
by airmail we are sending you a leaflet "Reconditioning of Aluminium Engines" . We marked the liner which you possibly could use.
Pls. check and contact us again or our representative for USA:

John, I'm pretty sure the link below that I got from Erik in Denmark is the manual they are sending you, if you want it now instead of waiting for air mail from Germany. It's quite informative.

I'm going with Nikasil on my block....I just posted for the rest of the people. I never knew these sleeves were made for the Alusil blocks.

I never knew either, just think of all those old blocks lying around as junk that could be fixed.

Just be aware that Nikasil is adversely affected by the higher sulphur content in US gasoline.

BMW spent millions of dollars replacing US Nikasil engines with Alusil on their '95 line of cars.

I did a lot of digging into the Nikasil story behind Bimmer. If it was the sulfur in the fuel, why has the 911 been so reliable for all these years? Porsche is using the Nikasil in the new GT2 911 which is liquid cooled. Also, BWM still uses the process in their motorcycle engines as does Honda and the rest of them

Something is fishy about the BMW automobile Nikasil failures. If Nikasil is that adversely effected by sulfur in US fuel, I would think the 911 and a lot of motorycle stuff would be failing by now and that has not happened. Perhaps it was a process issue, which BWM tried to cover up by blaming it on the fuel? Their "wonderful" M3 engine was loaded with problems too. Afterall, bad PR like that could kill Bimmer's market share overnight.

You make some good points there John.

Perhaps it was their specific Nikasil alloy, or something else that hasn't been fully disclosed by BMW.
