Default Here's another Delco Alternator Installed

Cost about $75.
Alternator listed for 1988 Camaro 6cyl, 105 Amp.
Drove about 50 miles on it last night. Worked great.
No air duct installed. Will consider it later.
Large hot lead goes to +Lug.
Exciter wire goes to wire marked "L" on the ConnecTite Pigtail.
Shimmed with 3 flatwashers on the pivot bolt.
Used single bolt to tighten, rather than modify the tensioner.
Must use a shorter belt ( 1 or 2 sizes shorter )

Awesome Chris!

Some Q's:
1) The 3 flatwashers were used to shim forward on the pivot bolt?
2) Where'd you get the ConnecTite pigtail?
3) Single bolt to tighten, you mean just the pivot bolt?

TX.

i think the pigtails are available through most auto supply chains ala AutoZone. I think they stock them because people are i guess often upgrading alternators from old stockers.

I bet that new alternator weighs half what the factory one does, that bastard is heavy!

The washers are used to shift the alternator aft in the vehicle. Needed for two reasons. To take up a little void space. And, to allow pulley alignment. Its also possible to change pulleys or shim pulleys according to other posts.

The pigtail is on the electrical parts rack at Advance Auto. I think its a GM semi-universal piece.

No, look where the tensioner used to be. See the bolt near there? Thats what I used. That in conjunction with tightening the pivot bolt. I think its a 13MM headed bolt with about 40 mm of threads or so.

Ryan, you ain't kidding. Its a lot easier to work with. I think $ was the motivator for me, and uncertainty as to what was wrong electrically and what I might need to buy next.

Does it charge at low RPM?

I'm almost committed to the factory alternator now after spending $40 on ducting for the stupid thing

Yes. Just gave me an excuse to go try it again. Steady needle, stays in same place with headlights on, no matter what rpm. Needle bounces a bit with signal lights flashing.

I interpolate that the needle is about 13.5 volts on my meter, or a hair more, just under the 14V mark. At idle / 750 ish rpm.

Not to mention that same $75 gives a 4ever warrantee!
I'm running the same setup on all the 928's. Keep your pulley and try the 5040335 belt. You might think about installing a small amount of plastic bug screen on the aft air port since we run so close to the ground. It's a real easy install.... cheap insurance too.
I have yet to run one with the ram air scoop. No problems at speed
Just my 2c worth.

Did it come with the pulley, or did you have to swap?

I've swapped all of them - the diameter is different and sometimes the belt style. IE the Euro was a v belt.
The alignment is easy, as stated, just add a spacer while pushing the bolt thru the mount, then tilt up the alternator.
I also needed to grind a little off the adjuster arm so it could articulate. It is a square end and I ground a bit of a relief, making it rounder, so it could swing closer to the alternator.
Now I wish I would have taken pictures

I used the pulley that came on the Delco & a shorter belt. Tracks fine, lines-up well. No grinding on this one. Maybe they have variations in the case.

Turned-in the French unit with pulley for the core refund.

Thanks for the idea about the screen cover!

I'm still having alternator problems even though I installed another one off ebay. May be junk not sure. I'm not going through the Porsche alternator again and will probably do the same mod. I noticed in the pic it was a serpentine belt. My car uses a V-belt. The pulley on my current alternator should also fit the GM one correct??

That's what I gathered from firemed's post, if he doesn't reply here, you should maybe PM him to be sure.

I've been using a delco on my 79 928 for over 17 years.
