I had my intake manifold and cam covers powder coated gold. Last weekend I painted the lettering red and black. I am pleased with how it turned out so I thought I'd share a pic.

This looks totally awesome!
Can you explain what type of process powdercoating is? I understand it involves some heat, but what are the actual steps in the process? How is the "powder" applied? What type of paint did you use to paint on the powder coating - engine paint?
Just curious...

My understanding of powder coating (I'm in the process of having mine done) is that it's a a ceramic coating process that starts with a soft sand blasting, The parts are then baked for, in my case, three days, to get all of the gasses and oils out of the pourous metal. The last step is the application of a ceramic powder which is then baked on. The letters are done with a Testor's paint pen.

Powder coating is a process where a metallic object receives an electrostatic charge, then a polymerized dry pigment with the opposite charge is sprayed (atomized, really) onto the object. The electrostatic charge ensures an even, smooth coat. The object is then cured in an oven. The result is a tough coating. The finish can be anything from paint-like to wild metallics, to a near plated look.
Do a google search on powder coating, and you will find many examples of finishes.
I don't know what Chris used, but typically you can use an enamel or ceramic paint over the powder coat. It is also possible to mask off and powder coat a different color instead of over painting - but that is really hard to do.

Chris,
I've been wanting to do this but when I purchased my car...I had all gaskets on top replaced so...what kind of a pain is it going to be to pull everything off, powder coat and re-install the parts?

I've just sent my spider off today to:
<a href="http://www.aloh.co.uk/" target="_blank">Stephen Smethurst web page</a>
Have a look at the images on his samples page. Hopefully the spider should come back in an as new surface finish. I did think about powder coating but I liked the metal finish better. I will post some pics when I get the parts back.
Cheers
Dave

Nicole,
The explanations above describe the powder coating process as well as I could. I handpainted the lettering with enamel using a fine brush. Others have applied it with markers. Hopefully the enamel will take the heat.

Hey Folks, I got a question for you. Can you powdercoat the block and heads? If you can, will the heat from the engine damage the finish or cause it to discolor of flake off? Thanks!

Hi
I have been in the powder business for 30 years. There are hundreds of colors. Its simply just plastic resins with different additives for color, gloss, texture etc. Its all mixed together and ground into a powder. If you take those parts and put a clear powder over them it will make them look so much richer. You can make the rims look like a factory finish if you have the right combination. I just restored my 1979 928, and did a lot of things over. Next year I'll do the engine parts, I want to drive it now but still have 2 weeks to go before its done.

Randy,
You should get some kind of award for the most postings of a single photo.I'll bet it doesn't take much to get you to open the hood. Looks great though.
