Question Drive Axles (Half Shafts) Maintenance

I just bought two used drive axles and on one of shafts the bearings are dirty. I was told not to clean them but to just repack the bearings with hight temp grease. Any ideas if this is correct?. If not what do you recommend I clean the bearings with without damage.

Thanks in advance <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

If by "bearing" you mean the CV joint, you need to buy a boot kit ($11.08 plus shipping from us) and clean and repack the joint (or all of them).

The boot kit includes the proper grease.

Use any available solvent to clean the joint - be careful with flammable solvents, and don't breath the fumes. If you disassemble the joint, be sure to get the center spider back facing the correct direction - the joint will bind if you get it backwards.

I would personally never dream of having a grain of dirt in a bearing! It also must be packed with the right grease. 928SP sells a CV boot kit for $15.

To service CVs and Rear Drive Shafts/Half Shafts:
1. Remove 300 lb. torque nuts (behind center hubcaps).
2. Remove hex bolts (6 per inner CV).
3. Remove drive shafts.
4. Snip off boots and clamps.
5. Remove CV bolts, plates that act as washers through which 2 bolts go, and end cap.
6. Clean CVs. The inner CV cap on the shaft side of the outer CV is welded on. I got really dirty shooting water with a self service car wash wand through and around the bearing and housing. There is a small hole through the center of the shaft that should be open on the outer/wheel end. (The 300 lb torqued nut goes on this end of the drive shaft.) The inner side bearing was much cleaner to high pressure wash.
7. I shot the bearings with brake cleaner and mineral spirits to flush out any water.
8. Force grease into the outer joint with gloved fingers. Cycle the CV up and down and around while forcing in grease.
9. Remove inner CV by pulling the circlip. Mine practically dropped right off the shaft.
10. Install 2 boots and 4 clamps on one shaft. Leave the bolted side inner boot loose on the shaft.
11. Install the inner CV and circlip.
12. Pack the inner CV.
13. Install bolts, corresponding plates, and end caps on inner CV.
14. Tighten all clamps.

When you put those half shafts on your car, make sure you tighten all the nuts according to factory specs - maybe even consider NEW nuts.

If they come loose at freeway speed, your 928 might get trashed. I was lucky to have the shaft come off at low (pedestrian level) speed...

Words of wisdom from Nicole... I would also use a medium strength Loctite on the bolt threads.
