Default X-Pipe or Y-Pipe

I am looking into some options here for my exhaust system. I have an early model 928 (1980) and I was thinking of getting the borla cat back setup but I am debating to go with a X-pipe or a Y-Pipe. I have read through some of the threads but can't find anything that applies to the earlier model cars. What are the main differences between the y-pipe and the x-pipe? Which one works better on earlier model cars? Are they both about the same when it comes to HP gains? How much louder does one of these make your car over the other?

The Borla is a single pipe so little point in an X which has two exhaust pipes if you are going into a single pipe muffler system.

Ive been wondering the same thing for my 84. Sure Roger and the DFW guys will answer all my questions on Sat.

Just from what I have read seems that 84 and older cars get the Y and 85 and newer get the X?

Can X go on any year? Which nets more HP gains on any year. Sometime like myself with a 16V... better to go with a Y than X?
I have one more year of emissions here in TX. My plan is to re-work the exhaust however the DFW guys suggest, and put the factory system back on next year long enough to have it inspected then swith it back.

The Y pipe was made for the earlier cars and sounds awesome with a Borla cat back or the even better 928 International cat back system which I stock.
The Y pipe is $379.95 in aluminized steel.

I have the same doubt... My muffler looks like was removed from Titanic due to corrosion and it's a good opportunity to set-up a new system.

I have a Flowmaster 40 Series that I want to use (mine is a 78 Euro), but what configuration (X or Y) is the best for our cars ?

Thank you guys !

Either would work just find just as long and they are are sized properly for you engine output.

This would assume the both X-pipe and Y-pipe were designed correctly for optimal flow and backpressure, ie. the location and size of the "X" or "Y" merge.

They are sound differences, but both are good in the own way. Just a matter of preference there.

If I had the money, I'd redo everything on my S4 to a 3" Y-pipe straight through exhaust with high-flow cat.

I have an 82 US. I am planning on:
85-86 tubular headers --> Y pipe --> hiflow cat --> 3" borla/flowmaster catback.

Any truth to the rumour that inside the euro muffler is an H crossover?
