Post Power steering hose

Does anyone have any experience replacing the power steering pressure hose. My '84S has recently developed a pinhole. Is this a difficult job and are their any tech articles around? I'd appreciate any help you guys could give. TIA.

I replaced the return hose on my 87 S4 last weekend. I realize that this is not the same hose, however I can tell you that there are some tight quarters to deal with here.

Your best bet would be to look at the Parts & Technical Reference (if you've got one - if not contact one of the big 3 to get one - ~$10). This book is invaluable to some detail on how things are physically aligned in our cars.

btw- since it is a supply hose, you may not be able to get it rebuilt. You may have to order another hose - $$$.

The line obviously will run from the PS pump to the rack - I would suggest raising the front of the car to permit access under it. Unbolt from the rack first and allow the hose to drain (this may also drain your reservior as well - don't know for sure).

I'd then remove it from the pump.

...I replaced all of the power steering hoses and auto trans hoses on my '80 928.
I removed them, took them to a local hydraulic hose supply (Cline Company) & had them replace hose while re-using the original connectors...much less expensive than complete new hoses and 4 years later they are still clean and leak free..

If you are talking about the hose that connects the resevoir to the pump; then I have. It's not difficult. You need to loosen up the pump. There are two places for this. one is obvious. The other is not. Loosen the bolt in front (the one you can see looking down) and then the second (the one you can't see). It's behind the first. You will need to use your sense of feel.

Thanks guys. Vertex has the hose i need for $89. I think I will try this job myself. My main concern is having the right tools for working in such quarters. I'll post when job is complete.

Well I finally got around to replacing the power steering pressure hose on my '84S. Very tight working area but not a bad job really. Took about 2 hours and that included a trip to the auto parts store for a crowfoot wrench. Tools needed are an 18mm crowfoot wrench for the fitting going into the steering pump, a 19mm wrench for the fitting going into the rack,a quart of Dexron ATF, and the new hose and crush washers. Lift front end and secure on jackstands. Remove the 19mm fitting at the steering rack and drain fluid. Then remove the 18mm fitting on the back of the steering pump. Gently remove the old hose from underneath the car and push the new hose up from under the car. It helps to have someone up top to grab the hose as you push it up. I used some thread sealing compound for the fitting going into the pump and the crush washers for the fitting at the rack. Lower car and fill the power steering fluid reservoir back up to the indicator line. Start engine and gently turn steering wheel from lock to lock. This forces the air out of the lines. Just remember not to force the steering when approaching the locks or this could damage the steering rack. If you look into the steering reservoir you can see the foam air bubbles escaping from the line. When all the bubbles are out you know all the air is out of the line. It would now be a good idea to crawl back under to inspect for leaks. I hope this helps anyone contemplating this job as there seems to be very little info about this on the various 928 tip sites.

Caution: The owner's manual clearly states in bold print that ATF Dexron is recommended for the power steering system. Do not use Power steering fluid.

to keep the 'luv lubed ' seals from leaking. Jamey, good post! And I plumb forgot all about the crush washer(s?) you used two? Thanx for reminding me. Next time straighten out a coat hanger or some baling wire run it from top down wrap it off on the hose then gently but firmly pull/guide it up.

Thanks for clarifying that Ed. I did use the Dexron ATF as stated in my owners manual. In retrospect, I should have pointed that out and not have used "power steering fluid" in such a generic fashion. Thanks for continuing to keep us straight.
