Shop Manuals on CD

![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Hi guys. I'm sure this question has been asked before, but here goes. Are there Shop Manuals available on CD? I contacted an imaging company near my home and they do transfers from fiche to CD for $1.50 per page. I know it would be very costly do have it done but mabey a way to make some money if one could afford the initial investment. Not sure about the copyright laws and all the legal stuff. Can anyone help me out?

Jim,
This is a huge can of worms that gets opened up from time to time. The archives will shine a little light on it for you but in a nutshell some here believe copying the manuals violates copyright laws, some fear lawsuits from Porsche while others simply don’t care as they believe Porsche should make available an ample supply for sale instead of the occasional printed supply that’s put on the market.
I’m sure you will be getting the usual response from the same crowd on this question. My personal opinion on copying the manuals, selling them or just hunting Mr. Porsche down for a set of the golden grail will be keep locked up in the vault however…don’t do what I did and send $350 bucks to some scum bag for manuals and end up having to chase him to the end of the world to deliver.
Good luck as you ponder this,
Tim Delarm

Jim,
Just type in "manuals" in search. More than enough info and opinions to keep you busy for ....
Well, you'll see.

Some interesting expansion on this subject:
At Devek days this year we had the privelege of PCNA's wholesale parts dude. Being the shy and withdrawn character that I am, my questions were about the manuals and why they aren't available. We continued the discussion on what it would take to get the manuals on CD, etc, but that's a separate subject for later.
Fact: Porsche (the factory and not PCNA) has deeded all manual production to an outside company in Germany. This is similar to the deal that major US producers have with HELM, I'm sure. But taking that one step further, they have turned over all rights and ownership of the manuals and their content to that company, precluding Porsche from producing the manuals themselves in the future, or licensing production to us.
Speculation: This means of course that Porsche and PCNA, since they don't own the manuals any more, can not prosecute you for copying the manuals.
Fact: It also means that it's pretty empty to try to negotiate with Porsche and PCNA directly for rights to produce a CD-ROM version of the manuals.
Further speculation:
The manual printers/owners wait until they have a critical mass of confirmed paid-for orders for the manuals. This puts our parts suppliers in a pinch, since it doesn't appear that there's a way get pre-payment back through PCNA and Porsche to the supplier to get them going.
In the meanwhile, there is an effort to legally produce manuals on CD. Please don't bombard me with messages and questions, as the discussion is at the most initial stages, and there is in fact only a very small chance that anything will come of it. Our chances of a manual on CD are most probably with our own group doing the writing and editing. I do have a set of printed manuals already, so in truth this is a philanthropic mission for me, secondary to the mercenary activities that keep the morgage bank off my doorstep.
More later as further research is completed.

Are you saying that the printed 928 manuals are hard to get in the US ? In Europe, they are readily available from Gmund books.
www.gmundbooks.com
They cost about $450, but carriage might be expensive. They seem to be printed in Germany by Kienle-Druck GnbH - 71282 Hemmingen.
My edition is WKD 481 620 engl. They seem to cover the US model variants.
Hope this helps

Except for electrical diagrams, my US manuals are very short on Euro and ROW version info. My guess is that there is some market protection where the US version can't be black-marketed back into Europe or other markets where they would undersell the local flavor. In addition, many markets do not have them available at all.
Thanks for the recommendation, by the way. As we trundle forward getting a CD version, it would be interesting to gauge the interest of the US owners who have Euro or other gray-market versions of the cars. Worth incorporating the worldwide info? Hmmmm....
Cheers!

Possibly include the Technical Bulletins as they update the Manuals. Also, my collection of 928 Manuals now exceeds 30 so there is still more information avialable.
Just got two new ones:

Hi all,
Interesting discussion but not that much help to the poor guy who asked. So here goes my two pence worth (sorry, cents):
1/. There is only one set of 928 manuals and they cover ALL countries. 9 volumes and I can tell you, owning a "Euro" (more powerful
)car I hate all the US stuff in there.
2/. If anyone wants pages from the manual let me know and I'll scan them for you and e-mail. - now there's an offer ! I'm waiting to be sued for it - bring them on.
All the best

Paul,
I think there may be two versions, which is why I posted the # of my Euro versions WKD 481 620.
I think there is a version for US WKD 481 621 ??
Perhaps the US guys can confirm.

Hi guys. Thanks for all the input. I did find what I was looking for. I'm sure if you dig around a little in the archives like I did you will find some useful info. Thats all I'm going to say on the matter.
