Overheating
I am having a curious problem with my 82 5spd.
When the Temp gets into the mid 90's like today in Minneapolis. My Shark runs fine as long as I can keep moving. When I get stuck in traffic, I start to over heat. (not in the red but higher than normal) Then I start to loose idle and it wants to stall.
Yesterday, (sunday) no traffic problems and it ran normal temp. When I stopped at dairy queen, and got back in the car the temp had risen higher than normal. It wouldn't start. I let it cool down for a while and it starts and runs fine. (The temp was back down to normal range)
When The outside temp is in the 80's or lower I never have this kind of problem.
Is this a common problem? Is my fan not functioning properly? Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help.

In all likelihood it's the fan not doing it's job. Anyway, that'd be a good place to start. On just about any car with an accurate temp gauge, you'll notice a rise in temperature if you were to restart it shortly or immidiately after turning it off. This is simply because the coolant has stopped circulating and was sitting in an already hot engine block. Anyway, start with the fan and see what's going on.

I agree with Kaz's assessment. Sounds like you may have lost silicone fluid from the primary viscous fan coupling and/or your auxilliary high-temp fan isn't kicking on, probaby due to a faulty temp sensor switch.

As a general rule, overheating at low speed indicates a problem with air flow. Some possibilities are:
Belt-driven fan clutch is slipping excessively. Replacement is best, but sometimes you can refill the silicone fluid in the clutch and help.
The electric fan may not be fully functional. The electric fan is triggered by one of three things; coolant temp (switch in left forward face of radiator); freon temp (switch on stem of receiver/dryer between bumper and radiator); and inlet air temp (switch on top of intake- normally for run-on after shut-down only). If the fan doesn't work, check fuse #16 and relay XVIII.
Another possible problem is air recirculation. if your front belly pan and front spoiler are missing, hot air from behind the radiator can go forward and go back thru the radiator.

I had the identical problem with my 85. Problem was the fan clutch. Had the same replaced and the problem is no more. My suggestion is that you get to a reputable 928 mechanic in your area for a diagnosis if none of the other suggestions work. What part of the country are you in?

Jim!
Sorry for asking "what part of the country you are in." Your reference to Minneanoplis was probably a ... clue. Anyway, I found this listing as a shop in your area that has experience with 928s. Know nothing about them save that they were on a "928 mechanics" board.
Leighton's Garage/Gary Tapp..........(Minneapolis) Eden Prairie, MI......... (612) 934-8900
Good luck

Hey Jim,
I am also a blue shark owner from Minneapolis. I would go to Johnson Autosport in Shakopee first if you need help. Leighton's isn't too bad but they seem to be slipping away as a prefered shop to go to through the PCA. (BTW, join Nord Stern, we need more 928's). Also if you have a Devek catalog, there is a black article that has three tech tips, one of which is the changing of this silicone fluid in the fan clutch, you replace it with a similar fluid that Toyota uses for their fan clutch. I would get their catalog and take a look. If you need any other info or a good dhop to go to in the area email me off the list, or techtalk@nordstern.org . someone will be more than happy to help you.
