Cooling Fins operation...
I could not find a post on this topic so forgive me if I missed it.
Specifically, here is what I need to confirm... with a 1987 S4. Without the engine running, when the ignition is turned to the "on" position and the A/C button is depressed, the cooling fins automatically engage to full open position. When the A/C button is depressed again to turn off, the fins stay open. Then, when the ignition is turned off, the fins completely close.
So we know the motor is working. The question: Is this how they should function under these operating conditions???

I would think they close until the car is at operating temp, then stay open.
Not sure when they would close again. I know the reasoning for them was to reduce drag for top speed runs, but i dont know what would trigger them to close again, perhaps when a certian speed is reached?
Good question

There is multiple pages of stuff about the cooling vents in the WSM.....most people pin them in the open position with zip ties, remove them altogether, or pull the plug on the motor or fuse to keep them in the open position......since you live in Canada.....having them work as designed would keep the car running warmer and make in warm up quicker on really cold days....but for the everyone else in hotter climates, they really aren't needed....the vast majority of 928 owners don't have problems with 928's running TOO cool...too hot is the problem! (I have never heard of 1 owner saying it runs too cool)
keep in mind they made 928's for 17 years and only installed the vents on 4 years then removed them due to excessive problems
