We went yesterday on a drive & dine with our PCA chapter to Ocala Fl to see the personal car collection of the Schmidt family at their National Parts Depot Warehouse. It has about 150 low milage cars in their original, unrestored condition, from 1911 to present day; all American except one;..... a 1979 Porsche 928 with 7300 original miles! Heck, I went just to see the shark! Although they had lots of incredible cars, from Caddys, to Mustangs, to a DeLorean, the shark was the only one that mattered to me.
I asked Rick Schmidt, who's dad started the company, the story on why they had a 928? He said they were at the auction at Hersey, when he noticed dad bidding on the car. He asked, "Hey dad, you do know thats a foreign car?" Dad's reply??,... "I always wanted one of those!" Said the car came from Colorado. It had at one point sustained some minor door damage, the owner had it repaired, then quit driving it. You could see a slightly different shade of color on the passenger door in the right light.
But, its a 5 speed, no rub strips, no sunroof, and a full leather interior-dash, console, doors, rear quarters! That interior looked like either Paul or Rob had just installed it! He also said dad normally drove his Ford GT, but had recently parked it & had been driving the 928 & loved it! The list of their cars showed it with 6600 miles, but I was able to see the odo & it was at 73XX. So dad has put about 700 miles on the OB. Many might say what a shame to risk driving it, but I say, hey, he's got the $$ & could have any car he wanted, let him drive & enjoy it! We all need a dad that cool!!! Woooo hooooo!!![burnout](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/burnout.gif)
The lighting sucked, I tried to take lots of interiors, but too much reflection. The cars were locked up so you couldnt open doors or hoods.
