Red face Horn Problem

Has anyone encountered a horn that would work with ignition off but would not work with ignition on?

My horn only works with the ignition in the off position ie key out of car.

thanks

That sound weird. I am also having a horn problem. My horn just doesn't work. The fuse is fine. I know I had to remove the steering wheel a couple of times. Could that have something to do with it. Well I hope there is an answer to both of our problems.

Zandramus,

WAG, try swapping horn relay X with either AC fan relay XVIII or fresh air blower relay XXI or defroster relay XXII. These are interchangeable relays on your 82.

Noel,

Remove the steering wheel and touch the copper bent tab to ground. if the horn sounds, then you need to carefully bend the tab to bring it closer to the back of the steering wheel where it makes contact. lubricate the tab and the back of the wheel a little bit.

If you get no horn sound when touching the tab to ground, refer to the info I gave Zandramus above, it applies to your 84 as well.

DISCLAIMER: I am relying on the relay chart on the 928 Specialists website for interchangeability. You should look at the relays and varify they are of a like kind with the same part numbers before swapping them out.

Noel,
The wire that comes through the steering wheel and attaches to the cover, also plugs into the back of the steering wheel. Use a small screwdriver and make sure that the wire is pressed all the say into the hole on the inside of the steering wheel.
When you pull the horn cover off, it could have pulled the wire loose from the inside. I had that problem.

My horn problem is that the original horn is so wimpy, no one hears or pays attention to it. I'm looking to upgrade to something between an 18 wheeler and a locomotive. Sorry I can't help with your problem, just had to vent about the wimpy stock horns.

Noel, I had the same problem as you after removing my steering wheel. All of the relays checked out fine. I solved the problem by doing what EII suggest. Mine was not pushed in far enough.
