Mirrors Misbehavin'
I've come up with a new electrical glitch this week; both my side mirrors suddenly will only adjust upward and leftward. Pushing the adjustment **** up or left works fine, but adjusting downward or rightward still results in the mirrors going up and/or left.
Does this sound like an adjustor **** problem, a mirror brain problem, or some other gremlin ? The fuses are fine. The car has the memory seat (not heated) and mirror set up.
I don't mind manually adjusting the driver's side, but it's a LONG reach to the passenger side mirror! Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Don't know if this is very helpfull (and I do know it sounds strange ), but a car I looked at before buying mine had the same problem. A few minutes later, when I tried to start the car, it wouldn't. Turned out the battery died - After a recharge, the problem went away.
(For this and other reasons, I didn't buy the car )

I had something simular. I'm not quite sure anymore what worked and what not, but half worked half not. It turned out to be the adjusting switch. It's interior consists of 2 ***** and springs.
The trick is to get everything in place again. Take some grease and "stick" the ball in place with it. Than carefully put the bottom back on.
The switch can be taken out pretty easily by using a small screwdriver or preferably something thinner. First check by shaking the switch if everything is still in place. if your'e still not sure, measure.

I have a similar problem on my 85. Both mirrors go up and down only. Even if you push the adjuster left and right. I tried another (used) switch and there was no change. I disassembled and cleaned the original switch and that did nothing either. Once in a while they work correctly. Let me know if you figure it out, I'm curious as to the next thing to try.

Don't know if anyone has ever disassembled the mirror before, but I've got one laid out on my workbench right now. Turns our the plastic "anchor" joint in my passenger side was broken, therefore no adjustemnt. If you need pictures let me know and I'll try to shoot some.

On my 82' turned out to be the switch.
I had disassembled and cleaned all of the console switches and the mirror switch. The results were immediate and I was a happy camper.
Unfortunately within 7 months problems started again ... I bought new ones from 928 Intl and the problems -with one exception- are now memory's.
The new sunroof switch only opens if I swap leads it will close so I'm pretty sure it is a defective switch.
The comment on available voltage is not to be taken lightly, either.

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions ! I will try cleaning the switch (sounds like the most likely culprit), and if that doesn't work (or it breaks apart with disassembly, dropping little tiny bits hither and yon), I'll order a new one from 928 International ($20 as I recall). I hope I don't need to find out what the inside of the mirrors look like !
Thanks again all!

Wow, didn't realize so many people had this problem! My problem only started after I had it into my mechanic to sort out a pervasive fuse shorting problem. They're currently in the right position, so I haven't tried to fix them for fear of rocking the boat!

As someone from the big 3 mentioned in a previous thread, try taking the switch apart inside a ziplock bag, so as to contain the little bearings yearning to be free...

Mine has had similar problems. The passenger mirror began by having to push down on the toggle switch while using the adjustment joystick. Now it does not work at all for the passenger side. Driver side works fine. I'll try cleaning mine too.

KBLair -- Since you are in there, I have a question. Is it possible to mount the mirror selector switch upside down? e.g. Depressing the left switch actuates the right mirror.

Here's some follow up...
First - Coby: Yes you can easily flip the Left/Right switch over if yours is reversed. Just pop out the switch and turn it over.
Second - I took the "4 Way Mirror Switch" apart (fascinating design, by the way ), cleaned it with "Electronic Cleaner", looked for obvious flaws (found none), reassembled it, re-installed the switch, and found myself back exactly where I began .
So, I went to 928 International's on-line order site (it's Friday night, after all) to order a replacement "4 Way Mirror Switch, '87-95", part No. 928 613 241 00, which lists in my 2002 - Volume 12 Catalog for $20, only to discover that the part now costs $59!!!!!!
I hope my 928 is appreciating in value at the same rate!!!!!!!!
Yes, I still oredered the part, and will let you know if it fixes the problem...if not, I'm out $59 plus shipping, and at the end of my very meager electrical abilities.
Stay tuned!
