Default Speedometer problem

Lately, my '87's speedometer only goes to about 40mph max regardless of the car's speed. The odometer is accurate. Would this rule out the sensor? Doesn't the odometer work off the same sensor as the speedometer? Searched for solutions and see a lot of references to a connector in the spare tire well. I don't see one on my '87.

try removing the spare tire and then look to the front of the well there should be a black plastic cover remove this and you should find the wire connections for the trans, going through the body towards the fuel tank, check these also you might have to do some work under the pod by cleaning up sonme of the connections with a pink eraser, always disconnect the battery whan working on the pod

I believe that if the problem is electrical (like a feed from the sensor) then both the ODO and SPEEDO would show problems. I like Merlin's idea of cleaning the contact points in the pod. Kind of fun to get in there. If you need help removing it, please let me know.

G'Luck.
