Fabulous. It's nice to have so much help. If it's anything like the quality of my German milling machine, I'll be a delight to work on. And expensive. But at a price of $4800, who can complain?
I'm still wondering how this car can exist without limited slip... I'm guessing the low center of gravity and the wide tires.
I guess I better buy it before I spend any more time asking questions.

My 82 sat alot, the PO drove it 700 miles in 7 years of ownership, stored in an unheated and apparently rodent infested garage. Blew big scary clouds of white smoke for the first 100 of the 750 miles taking her home, then cleared and has run smooth and strong since (17Kmiles). Probably rings getting reaquainted, or valves finding their seats. Nearly caught fire when I turned the heat on, thankyou rodents. Cosmeticallty, she was and is a show car, easy to fall in love with. BUT: lots of oil leaks, lots of R&R, did the oil pan and motormounts over the winter, ball joints, Timing belt, waterpump, Alternator. Hoses. Wires/cap/rotor/plugs...
Next winter will be cam tower seals and probably rear main seal. Probably engine fully out cleanup. Looking forward to it. Endless 'opportunities' to enjoy yourself. All killers if yer paying somebody else to do it though. Someday she'll be completely dry, gonna keep her forever unless I get seduced by a high condition S4.
Anyway, my 2cents says Buy it now. Take the plunge, I mean at 5K? Lets face it if any of us had any sense at all we'd all be driving 97 Honda Accords....
Good luck

My 82 sat for at least 4 years before I bought it and then another 3 after I got it in the drive way. I have had no leaks on the engine. I did have to clean the tank and the lines and have the injectors rebuilt (rich@cruzinperformance). For what the price is on the 79 I think that it would be well worth it. Nice how people are re-animating these cars.

If you are lucky the tank sticker will be intact. It is located under the carpet in the hatch area. Checking the sticker will tell you if you have the LSD. Look for option code 220.
The LSD is very nice to have for use on a track or autocross. It will actually perform quite well on the street without it. I understand that most non-LSD cars still lay two patches of rubber on a hard launch. It is mainly in the turns under power that you will want the LSD. It didn't become standard until 1990 I think.
Sounds like you found a great deal, Enjoy

I'm sure it doesn't have an LSD. I'll find out how it drives, and then think about what to do.
By the way, an open diff. will always lay down two stripes, until the friction force from one of the wheels is low enough for it to spin.
And with good tires, sway, and low CG, it might be that the 928 doesn't really need lsd until really hard cornering.
I've been driving old pickup trucks ever since I had a little accident with my '69 Datsun 510 2.0 liter propane turbocharged project back in 1982. I haven't been this excited in twenty years.
I can see this is going to be fun.

We are all ready to welcome you to the 'club/family'!
If you REALLY want to get excited - Check out the post on "Sharks in the Park" - THIS weekend in the SF BAy area (I think only about an hour away from you). I am sure that you can PM Nicole or any of the others in that post thread and they will tell you where/when.
You will make new friends, get to drool (A LOT!)over some nice 928's, and get more help/advice then you can imagine!

I'm about 5-6 hours from there. I'd love to go, but I think I'll wait til I actually have the car, and go next time. The reason being, I get 8 mpg and it's in an old 4x4 truck. Arrrgh, I'd dearly love to go. But there are other reasons as well. I'm so thrilled I feel like a kid. And to make things worse (better) I just go back from town where a bunch of older Ferrari's were filling up. After talking with them, I found that the road I live on is one of the best for sports cars. And then it gets even better- every time I talk to the owner about this 928, he tells me what other new stuff is in the vehicle. New tach, new rack and pinion, spaced wheels, new windshield. Maybe I need a cold shower.
