My friend wants a 928....
And he wants to know what he is getting himself into. He wants a 5 speed, but I understand the 5 speeds were known for eating themselves before 1987 models. He also wants a 32V motor...what model year did they start making them? How much maintainance should he expect yearly on one? On my 951 I have averaged $2000 a year (in a year and a half) but the previous owner of my car appeared to have abused my car. He is looking to spend around $12000 on one. Does anybody have a good link to a model rundown? Any particular problems to look for on specific model years? If he gets a 16V motor, can he swap 2 951 heads, 8 pistons, turbo/intercooler gear and custom piping and run a twin turbo 928?(just dreaming). Let me know guys...you may have a new member soon.

I would suggest a 1988-89 S4. But that is also a little bit more than $12k, but not too much.

Ribs,
Possibly I have an '88S4, grand prix white/black, modified to GT specs in superb condition 928 for sale. I could only sell it to the right person who would enjoy the car. I have owned the car for five years and am looking for another project. Have him call or write me an e-mail.

If you're going to look recommend 88-89 MY, there's no reason not to look at 87's. In fact they are plentiful and maybe a bit less expensive. Current market for decent 87,88's is mid teens depending on mileage, condition, records, upgrades, etc. The 87 and 88 are virtually indistinguishable. 89's had the antanae on top (personally don't care for it, but whatever) and the on board computer if that's important to you. There's no performance difference in 87-88. I believe the final drive ratio went up to 2.54 from 2.20 in 89(not sure though)...which is much more desirable for lower end launches IMO.
Good luck,

In Jim Pasha's 928 article in Excellence, it mentioned that they changed the material that they mead the heads out of between the 87 and 88 model years. So, if you get an 88 you get the updated heads.
