Post Essential Supercars

928 forum Rennlisters may be interested to hear of the following, published as a supplement to a recent edition of the influential Btitish magazine ‘car’.

The supplement is entitled “The Essential Supercars” and is a collection of the impressions of autojournalists and designers of arguably the definitive list of ultra-performance road-going cars of the last three decades. It describes some thirty or so exceptional vehicles including the McLaren F1, Ferrari F40, Porsche 959, Lamborghini Countach, and Ford GT40.

Imagine my delight then, at finding on page 15 (you guessed it) The Porsche 928!

Described by Roger Bell as the “most useable” supercar any realistic reader would have to concede that amid this collection of exotica the 928 has to be the runt of the litter. Nevertheless there it is, compared favourably to cars with double the horsepower and as much as twenty times the pricetag!

Bell’s contribution preaches just a little bit more of the widely misunderstood truth which we, the converted, have known and appreciated all along. ie that the sadly criticised and underacclaimed 928 deserves to be counted among the truly great cars of the 20th century.

Yes, but if you have a 911 you can run in the "Inner Porsche-Snob crowd".

Remember, the shark was made to replace the 911!
