I recently had a small leak in two of my cooling hoses. Due to that I lost enough water for the coolant light to come on. I replaced the hoses and refilled the water reservoir. I had the water filler cap off for about fifteen minutes in idle and "burped" the system several times by squeezing the lower hose.
My coolant warning light now comes on irradically, but the reservoir seems full.
Do I have air in the system or just a coinsidence and a sensor went bad?
Thanks,
Sab.
On my 86.5, the coolant level sensor is a simple float type. Mine was a bit gummed up. I removed and cleaned it real good. If I recall, it comes out from the bottom. Best to remove the reservoir and then pull the sensor.
Take into account there are two sensors, one for water level and another for pressure in the cooling system (Placed just before the reservoir) My pressure sensor went bad - Easy to check, just remove the el-connector when your warning light is on.
PS: The pressure sensor is not on pre - 1984 models
Coming off the front of your coolant tank, there is a hose with a 2 piece "clip" sensor. unhook it and make sure the contacts are clean and free of corrosion. Also check for corrosion on the 2 wires attaching to the level sensor on top of the resevoir.
