Tim,
I haven't seen the procedure to check the crankshaft play, perhaps someone else can answer that question.
What I do know is that for MY 84 and earlier, there is a specific procedure for setting the proper tension on the crank when reinstalling the torque tube. If you don't follow the procedure you are risking thrust bearing failure.
The procedure is in the factory workshop manuals.

I made a small bracket to mount my dial indicator to one of the housing cover bolt holes, making sure it was perpendicular. With the pinch collar loose, I used a pry bar to move the crankshaft from one extreme to the other, prying on either side of the flywheel. There was an audible clunk and I could feel a solid stop. Maximum allowable wear was .016". Mine was .007" with 150K mi.

Can the flex plate be accessed without removing any exhaust parts? In other words: Is the cover the only thing that needs to be removed in order to check this out?

Nicole,
From what I have read on the list, if you have cats, you need to drop them some to get the cover out. No cats (as in my Euro), cover comes out easily, everything is accessible to check end float.

Nicole,
US S4s with cats, you need to drop the exhaust. You can get the cover off without removing the O2 sensor, just prop it up so it dosen't hang on the O2 wires. I have done it on a '85 USA car with cats without removing the exhaust.
While you are in there, do the "Loctite fix".
