It is the piece from the steering shaft yes,

I have never seen one fail. I put one from an 85 in its place. Bolted right up.

Now does anyone see a reason as to why one would not replace that with a chunk of aluminum or just bolt the two halves together?

Just like rubber in the suspension or engine mounts Porsche wanted the car to feel nice and limit vibrations.

Because it allows movement fore and aft, and as well as acting like a universal joint, and a vibration/shock damper.

The desire to remove every single peice of rubber from the car continues to amaze me, I'm sure people would replace the tyres with something solid if only the grip wasn't compromised.

I have seen those adds for the Tweels before and would be interested in checking them out

And Paul, for me the 81 is not really a ride confort machine, so that doesnt really bother me. The people who are keen on dropping the rubber bits from the car are after a different thing all together. They are wanting to have less parts to fail on the car, and to stiffen everything up for better responce.
Rubber deteriates over time and parts need to be replaced. For cushy everyday drivers replacing the pieces is a good idea. But for a car with stiff suspension, that is driven hard, It doesnt make a huge difference to make it solid.
This shaft is normally solid on most cars. So I will look at making a solid piece for it in the future.
