Question Replacement of Starter Ring Gear

The starter ring gear on the 78 auto is chewed up in a 3" area. To get the complete replacement ring gear installed requires moving the transmission/torque tube back about 4-6 inches. Has anyone investigated/tried trisecting the ring gear to facilitate replacement? My thoughts are to cut the ring between the two bolt holes at each of the three mounting points. Any words of wisdom or BTDT's?

Any advise to speed up the process would be appreciated as the 78 5 speed is in the body shop and I'm beginning to suffer withdrawal pains.

Just one comment. While your in there "the right way or the backyard mechanic way" replace the rear main seal for around 20 bucks.
