That may work. The striker is held to the mechanism by the two allen heads through the door.
With those gone, the door may open with the striker being held in place inside the plate within the door jam. Or it may give better access to the release pin.
Before you start chiseling, get a supply of bandaids, the kind that fit on knuckles.
