Question Euro fan belt tensioner?

Anyone know if the tensioner on a 1980 automatic (they don't have a smog pump) is the same as the euro fan belt tensioner?

Thumbs up

Yes, it is.
I had an 80 Auto, and now have a couple EuroS (one is a box of parts).
I believe I still have a couple lying around.

I had on on my car until the bearing went south. I took it to a motor and pump shop. They could not see how the unit could be dis-assembled for bearing replacement. I'm going to try some ideas to make this thing work again because I would like to use it and many of those who have euro fan tensioners will someday face this problem.

I know what you mean Greg. I just removed mine of the 80 and I don't see how it could be replaced either.

The bearing use is very similar to the one used on the timing belt tensioner (928 105 512 12). I have with some success used one but it does require some machining and it is a pain.

Greg, when your bearing went, how did the pulley act? Is it supposed to spin freely? Mine spins well, no noises, but it stops spinning after about 4 or 5 revolutions.

Spins very freely. You could grab the pully and wiggle it a 32nd or so. The belt didn't run true and wiggled a bit with the engine running.

Mark, that was the direction I was headed, I wonder if it's worth the effort.
