Engine oil leak - Guard Red1979-5 Speed
Hi All, I had some oil dripping from the front of the engine. I found about a cup of oil laying in the galley under the oil filler. I do not mean the mail galley on the top of the engine, but the small recessed galley just forward of the main galley. I might have spilled oil into this galley when pouring in engine oil after an oil change, but I doubt it, as I am careful. My question: Is this a likely place to catch oil for any other reason like cam o-ring seals? Another question: I want to tighten all the screws on my oil pan as some were really loose. I cannot gain access to those under the cross member. Can I lift the engine enough without loosening the front motor mounts? If I loosen the front motor mounts, is it safe to raise the motor a couple of inches?
I have had my 928 for over twenty years and have done nearly all the work on the car myself. It has 100K miles and is always garaged in So. Cal. It still looks like new and runs like new. It has been a very reliable car. The biggest job that I have done myself was to strip the top of the engine and to install new fuel injectors, plugs, timing belt and all the tubing and hoses under the intake manifold. That did make a difference.
Thanks, Ern

Some possible oil leaks in that area include the gasket under the filler, and the vent hose that attaches to the filler.
I also tighten (snug is a better term - they don't go tight!) the oli pan bolt periodically. A long open-end wrench or a 1/4" drive extension and universal will get most of the bolts well enough. I wouldn't bother to lift the engine.
It won't hurt anything to lift it a bit, though. A block of wood under the pan is reasonably safe.
