Post What year seats have adjustable lumbar

I am toying with the idea of transplanting a set of 928 seats in my 944S2 for the extra lumbar support.

What year/model 928 had adjustable lumbar? Do I specify 8 way, 12 way etc in my search?

Also, my car has 2 electronic adjustments for height. Is it a simple snap on job, or does the electrical connection have to be modified?

The car is my daily driver and it sits at a train station all day, so I don't want to make it look inviting to thieves.

Thanks in advance.

Mine's an '87 and I've got the adjustable lumbar on the drivers side only. The lumbar has 4 way control, so that makes the seat 12 way. The passenger seat is only 8 way.

Tom,
Adjustable lumbar seems to have been an option across all years - my GTS has it but others I've seen of similar vintage do not. Also its usually just the drivers seat even on those that have it - never seen a passenger set up with lumbar - although of course its basically the same seat. So you need to look for the option code on a vehicle. It should be:
'586' for Drivers Side Adjustable Lumbar Support
or look for "Positrol 12 way seats" or seats with 3 circular switch mounting discs with 4 way switches in each.

Also while you are looking you might like heated seats too:
'139' Drivers Side adjustable Heated Seat &
'340' Passenger Side Adjustable Heated Seat

However heated seats seem even more rare than the lumbar support, And frankly not that useful in Phoenix (cooled seats - now that would be great!) Incidentally 'Positrol' also refers to the seat (and mirror) memory - some of which is mounted under the seat - but the seat memory control buttons are part of the mirror memory controller... not so easy to transplant.

However manual controls still work fine with mem functions unhooked - just need a fused power line. I don't believe all 12 way seats had memory...

Alan,

thanks. I will look for seats with three four way switches. i assume the mirror memory probably wont work on my 944 without other software. my wife doesnt use the car enough to warrant playing with electrics for a memory feature.

when we got rid of our Legend Coupe last year my only requiement was memory mirrors to go with the memory seats. On the Aurora the memory sets the climate control, radio, seats, lumbar, and mirrors. makes driving a four door bearable.

i think some saabs and my neighbors navigator have cooled seats. i'll take my butt sticking to the seat over driving a land yacht like the navigator.

well,
I've got an oddball. The passenger side's got lumbar the third button... and me, the driver has no lumbar. Interesting eh?

Anyone have an idea what a clean pair with lumbar is worth?

Sterling,
I just looked at your web site. if after what you did to your car you consider trimming the leather difficult, i am staying away from tools. i want to find a clean set of seats with lumbar, and just bolt em in.

I'm humble enough to admit my limitations (or short attention span).

928ssss,
Too bad - sounds very odd! Since I posted the initial message I have seen another GTS (on the registry pages) with lumbar on the passenger seat. I assumed it also had it for the driver(...but now I'm not so sure) but there was no drivers side photo. Interestingly while most cars without lumbar have just the 2 disk trim setup some seem to have the 3 disk set-up with a blanking plate in the rearmost position. I can only assume this is because they have seat heaters and need the larger trim for this... Otherwise it wouldn't make sense but the pictures are too small/grainy to tell for sure.

Why mention it - well you could maybe get the blanking plate for the passenger side & swap the seat backs & switch gear to get lumbar in the place you really need it - oh well probably more work than its sounds. The lumbar really is good though - makes the seat supremly comfortable for long trips.

Anyway your regular passenger probably wouldn't appreciate it!

Alan

PS anyone seen memory seats on the passenger side? - if you look under the blanking plate on the door there seems to be wiring for this (unless its just intended for RHD cars) I think its in the schematics in the factory manual too -and if I recall correctly it doesn't control the mirrors. Of course you have to have a memory enabled passenger seat - you can plug the left side buttons in to the harness but it does nothing (I couldn't resist trying)

My car is an '87 and it originally had lumbar on the driver side and passenger. The seats were shot when I got the car so I replaced them with used seats from a donor car. I'm not sure what year the donor car was but the seats have lumbar driver and passenger just like my originals. It also has memory on both sides.
I paid $800 for both seats. They're in really great shape - say an 8.5 out of 10.

Alan,

Don't most 928s all have memory seat for the passenger side? Mine has the 3 buttons for 3 different settings for both driver and passenger.

But, agree with you...even though I would much rather have the lumbar on the drivers side, it seems like a lot of work to move it to "my" side.

My '92 GTS has adjustable lumbar and seat memory for the driver's seat only.
Both seats are heated though.

Personally, I wouldn't be unhappy, if there was less electrical stuff in my shark's seats but there is no use in complainig I guess...

Where are the switches for the heat and the memory? i assume the vertical switch is for the memory, and the heat is on the console?

That's my passenger seat without lumbar and memory you're looking at.
The vertical switch is for the heat.
The driver's seat looks just like the passenger seat, except that it has a third functional switch disc for the lumbar.
The three memory switches are integrated into the armest (door speaker region).
