Red face not the afternoon i expected!

1984 euro M28/22 engine.

well it looks like the story has a sad ending. i have just come back from trying to sort my errant vehicle....many thanks to all whole have helped solve the problems.

it seems that the engine is faulty. i removed the oil filler while the engine was running to be confronted with a torrent of smokey fumes. with this cover off, and the breather pipe plugged, the car settled down to a nice mixture, and an even idle.

it then warms up, and stops. very tight to turn on the starter, will fire, but won't idle.

decided to check the oil by draining some off. the oil has a grey colour, with extremely fine particals of metal in it (dust).

i know the previous owner had troubles with over heating, so i guess a piston has 'picked up' on the bore....oh joy!

the next task is to pull the engine, and crack it open to inspect the damage.

so all that checking of ecu's, injectors, cam timing, ignition timing, fuel pressures and sensors etc......and it was the engine all along!

anyone have a good 4.7L 16V Euro engine lying around?

Man.....I really hate to hear this.

As a side note, it may not be the Piston/Cylinder...it may be the Thrust Bearing has decided to go South. If this is the case, the motor is toast.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

hi jay

thanks for the support.

why do you suggest thrust bearing?

i always thought these engines tended to have piston/bore problems when then got over hot.

the thrust bearing is easily replaced...part of main bearing set isn't it??

JohnB, I do know someone with a spare 83 16V motor sitting around. It's US spec but perhaps you can convert it over. The owner pulled it and put an S4 engine in from a wrecked car he bought. If you're interested let me know.

hi lastv8, may well be interested.

i will know more when i have my engine in bits. hopefully over the next few days. maybe more cost effective to try and find engine here in the uk.

i hope it doesn't come to that, and that my engine is repairable.

skinned knuckles and time will tell!

Typically, thrust bearing failure is attributed to later models - '88 onward, I believe.

Here's an archived discussions on the topic:

Ouch. Doesn't get much worse than that. But at least the mystery of the cursed car is solved. I was starting to wonder if I have any business playing with cars.

I bet you can find a good used motor in the UK. I don't think you need the automatic version (M28.22) specifically because I don't think the engine internals are different. It probably has different vacuum fittings and such which your original engine can donate. Check with VanZweeden (http://www.v-zweeden.com/ned.htm). I'm sure they can help you out.

Another option is to just give up and sell/part the thing out and get one that runs. It might end up being the cheapest thing to do actually.
