TDE, I'm not sure how much Brian's S4 should go for but I bought mine from Par Porsche in New Rochelle NY two years ago, with all records, 69k on the odometer for $16,5. My car is an automatic.

Tim, in regards to $, make an offer of what you are comfortable with. Prices on an '88 range from $10-$28k asking. Chances are there will always be a better deal than the one you got as well as a bigger horror story than you may possibly encounter. If the car is in your range, you like the color, and everything checks out, then make an offer. The worse that can happen is that the seller says no and you must look for another.

I haven't really followed this discussion very closely, but wanted to mention that the '91 S4 on ebay did not sell. Maybe this is the time to talk to the seller about a pre-purchase inspection and - if it checks out OK - make an offer?

However, I agree that Brian Buxton is proably one of the best sources for high quality used 928s. Generally, I believe that a 928 in perfect condition is worth a premium.

tdelarm,
since you mentioned that you were looking specifically for an '89 to '91 S4, there is an '89 S4 with 38,500 miles for sale by Porsche Exchange. http://porschexchange.com/
I don't know anything about these people, but maybe someone else here does? Anyway, they are asking $21,900, and the listing says that they have all of the books and records for the car. It's $1000 less than the '88 that Brian has and it is a year newer, about the same miles. Might be worth looking at. Anyone know anything about Porsche Exchange?

Great tips…feeling closer to finding that shark!
KAZ, what year is your S4? NICOLE, thanks for your Ebay tip, unfortunately the seller wasn’t to interested in helping out with service records so maybe that’s why he’s got no bids. KALBRI, called on your Porschexchange.com lead and spoke to a Larry, it sounds nice. Say’s he’s been sitting on it since purchasing mid last year at auction. CarFax shows clean. Question, do clean 928’s sit that long normally?
Here’s the deal on Brian Buxton’s 928 S4…
Spoke w/ Brian, very knowledgeable and accommodating. He sent pic’s right away and it shows nice. 36,870 miles, original condition Blk/Tan, 2 owners since new-last being a surgeon, clean CarFax and AutoCheck reports, all books and proper service stamps (yet to view myself) PPI being performed tomorrow by Foreign Performance along w/ T-belt and water pump replacement. Sound nice? Full report after it’s doctor visit tomorrow.

They've had that gray 928 for a long time. If I recall, they were originally asking $29k. That's probably why it hasn't sold. Regarding the two cars against each other if both checked out well, my question would be "which color do I prefer?"
If you're still considering Buxton's in 2 weeks, I will be in Evansville and could have a look. Every time I have stopped at Brian's to check out his cars, his descriptions have been spot-on.

I have an '87 S4 with less than 30,000 original miles. Black/light gray. Only option is sport suspension (no sunroof). Looks and drives like a 2-3 year-old car. Located in Oregon, came from LA.
Ready to sell for under $20k.

Hey all,
I’ve seemed to develop a beer belly sitting in front of the computer researching 928’s and the boss is kind of wondering when I’m coming back to work! I've come close but no cigar! Mostly due to some sellers wanting too much for them but I have a couple left on my list before digging up a new list...sigh! And I mean that in a fun way. It's tough though not buying on emotion, which I’m usually pretty good at but I don’t want that “feeling screwed” feeling (we're not talking love life here!) every time I walk into the garage because I paid too much.
At this point, Brian Buxton's 88 has not worked out for me but he seem's to be a nice guy to deal w/ if you need a 928.
“THE PURPLE ONES BACK” on Ebay after previously selling for $24k, this time offered by all people, “Daniel Schmitt”, I’m guessing he thinks someone is going to pay more then what it sold for last time…who knows? Nice color too.
Nicole, I noticed Best-buy Auto Wholesale has listed their 91 again for $25k w/ no maintenance history I might add. Funny, I thought I saw it listed w/ AutoTrader for around $21k. Thanks for trying though.
Kalbri, I’m currently looking into the 89 Gray/Linen you sent my way. So far everything checks out, waiting for more pictures to be emailed then maybe a flight over to drive. Still, $21.9 is high but we haven’t spoke about price yet.
Thank the 928 God’s for CarFax…salvaged titles; flood damage & odometer rollbacks seem prevalent so watch out shark people not to mention the lack of service records for many.
All in all when the new “Shark” is resting peacefully in it’s dry lagoon, it should make for a good post.
Please keep the tips coming!
Thanks
