Default Shipping seats

So the seller of seats I bought in Charlotte, says he was quoted $500. I asked him to package the seats as I do, ie face to face inverted, in one box .. he says those particular seats once they lose power, can't have the backrests flipped froward ... weird. So, any thoughts guys?

You would think the seats would have a manual method of movement as the 928 seats do...

Maybe it is time for you to move south

I only shipped seats once but i used a wardrobe box and ended up cutting the height down to save on shipping expenses. $500 is crazy for shipping.

Ask him to package it and pay for his time to package and purchase a box and then maybe you can set up a pick up for yourself through your shipper of choice.

Of course i am sure the seller wont let you because they need to make more money on the deal, thus the $200- i mean $500 shipping.

when shipping you pay for size, not weight. It's cheaper to ship the seats in 4 smaller boxes than one big box, so if he's willing have him dissemble them and do it that way.

I shipped a pair of power seats to Milwaukee once - I also used a cutdown wardrobe box. I belvee it was around $120 with Fedex. Greyhound may be another option - they are inexpensive, but they lost a hood I shipped once.

I shipped my seats from New York to Florida and back. the best way is to put them together and make one box out of two boxes. The costs go by weight and/or dim weight(size of box). I used Fedex for my shipment. UPS is to rough on boxes, but I have heard so is Fedex. Try DHL, they may be kinder.

Heinrich,
I've shipped a couple of sets of seats to TX, CA, etc. I buy wardrobe boxes as well, and put one seat in each. Have to be careful to keep the weight under 60 lbs to keep costs down. As I recall, each seat cost ~$40 each way to TX and back, using FedEx. A bit more to CA, but not a lot. Perhaps ~$100 for both seats. If I ship both front and backs, I put the lower back seats in with the fronts, and package the folding rear ones (which are heavy and put box weight above 60 lbs) in a separate box, these ship for about $15.

Got my SRD's shipped to me via UPS in a large wardrobe box. One on the bottom normal and one upside down on top of that. Wrap them together like that and drop them in the wardrobe box. Cost $100 for oversize UPS...and took less than one week from Rochester NY to Olympia WA...

Good luck,
Tom

Thank you everybody, that's GREAT advice ... I'll see what I can do. I'll try to persuade the seller to help by following your advice....

H,

keep in mind that packaging both seats together increases the chance of damage since the mass is greater.

That is usually how clients send me the seats, but they are to be recovered, so nobody cares if anything gets scuffed.

When they go back, I pack each seat separately, with the backrest laying flat between the seat bolsters. Easier to wrap and protect every surface that way.

Each seat usually costs me around $70 to ship through FedEx. But they posted an increase in cost, so it might be a bit higher now.

Paul,
Again, the secret to lower shipping costs via FedEx and UPS is to keep the weight below 70 lbs (I think that's the upper limit for rate changes). That's why I pack the rear seat backs separately - saves much bucks on shipping 3 boxes instead of two!!
Just trying to keep the $$ we transfer to the shipping companies lower, so we can buy more parts from suppliers such as you!!! - Ha!!
