Post Cruise control. All electric.

I came across a post from Olive in Morocco from last October referring to a dead electric cruise control on an 89S4. Several people responded including Wally PLumley but nobody offered any advice except to check the Nichols pages.

I have the same YM as Olive, 89(Euro GT), the same problem (cruise dead as a dodo) and the same complaint. (Everybody else inc Nichols refers to the vacuum cruise). Mine is definitely all-electric. The fuse and relay are OK. Any other advice re troubleshooting would be much appreciated. Colin. 89GT Euro. Slate.

Colin,
From what I've read, I think ALL the cruise controls use vacuum...could be wrong since I haven't BTDT. The one thing I do remember seeing is that a lot of the cruise control failures were cured by checking vacuum and/or by pulling the cruise brain and re-soldering the connections on the circuit board. Probably the best thing to do (other than wait for a more knowledgable person to reply) is to search the rennlist mail list archives.

1) Check output of fuse #4 - S/B 12 vdc w/ ignition on.
2)Remove multi-pin plug from control unit. Turn ignition switch on.
NOTE:With terminals on plug facing you, and cable on the right end, the top row, starting from the left end, is 1,3,5,7,9,11,13. The bottom row, starting from the left end, is 2,4,6,8,10,12,14.
3) Check for 12 vdc on term 1, ground on term 12.
4) Check for 12 vdc on term 3, ground on term 12 - push cruise switch off - voltage should disappear.
5) Check for 12 vdc on term 4, ground on term 12 - S/B zero. Push cruise switch to set, S/B 12 vdc.
6) Check for 12 vdc on term 6, ground on 12 - S/B zero. Push switch to resume - S/B 12 vdc.
7Check for 12 vdc on term 8, ground on term 12 - S/B zero. Press brake pedal - S/B 12 vdc.
8) Check for 12 vdc between termins 1 and 14 - S/B 12 vdc. Press clutch - S/B zero.
9) Check resistance between term 11 and 12. Push car - Ohms should fluctuate from zero to infinite.
10) Check resistance betweenterm 5 and 8 - S/B 30-40 Ohms.
11) Check resistance between term 7 and 10 - S/B 2 - 6 Ohms.
12) Check resistance between term 9 and 12 - S/B 2 - 4 kOhms.
13) Check resistance between term 12 and 13 - S/B 2 - 4 kOhms.
14) Check resistance between term 1 and 7 - S/B 2 - 6 Ohms.
15) Check resistance between term 5 and 6 - S/B 30 - 40 Ohms.
16) Check resistance between term 2 and 4 - S/B 2 - 4 kOhms.
17) Check resistance between term 2 and 3 - S/B 2 - 4 kOhms.

If all readings are correct, replace control unit.
