Current Porsche owner looking for a 928
Hi, I currently own a 99 C2 and a supercharged Boxster. I would like to add a 928 to my arsenal of toys. I am completly ignorant with the 928 (well I know the basics) and would like to seek the advice of you experts:
1- Should I try to buy the most recent I can?
2- S, S4 or GTS
3- Years to avoid
And any other tidbits you may have for me.
TIA

I think the old rule of thumb holds up here -as new as you can afford. I would add one caveat. I own a 1987 (S4), but in hindsight I should have given more thought to the 1986 1/2. It's still a 32 valve motor, but I get the sense that it's more susceptible to mods.
One other tip. The 928 seems especially prone to deterioration if not regularly driven, so be wary of the super low miles cars. They like a little use now and again.
Check out www.928s4vr.com It's a wealth of info describing the differences between the years.
One thing that tripped me up is the GT and what that meant. 1987 to 1991 was the S4.
For 1990 and 1991, 5-speed S4's were called GTs. So there's no such car as a 1990 or 1991 S4 5-speed. The GTs has a few other desirables as well.

You have to decide the body style you like. Either pre-87 or or post 87.
If you like the older body style the 86.5 seems to have most of the S4 upgrades. Having said that, however, there is a strong following for all the earlier years so look at those too. The early year Euro versions have some great HP numbers too.
If you like the newer body style ( S4 ) then you might want to look at the somewhat subtle changes made in the later years (Both cosmetic and HP) that came with the GT and then the GTS.
If you like the GTS then by all means get the nicest one you can find and afford. Only issue I have ever heard about the GTS has been oil comsumption but I have no data.
Personally, I like the 87 because of the body style and higher hp that year (316) but I also like the GTS so I made some upgrades.
Whatever you get, make sure you get good records it is worth the wait - believe I know
Just look at the picture - you cant go wrong. 1986 1988 1993 -
