Post Aftermarket exhaust mufflers

I'm in need of replacing the intermediate and rear mufflers on my Euro twin pipe setup. It is currently the factory original but both mufflers have been getting more holes than I can patch effectively. The twin pipes themselves are in excellent condition throughout. What are my options for an intermediate and rear muffler? I plan on replacing both mufflers with new ones (as opposed to just running twin straight pipes in place of 1 of the mufflers)since it is plenty loud enough the way it is now. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Paul, I am interested in what you are doing as I am trying to restore my original twin-pipe setup (see my post "ask me how I broke my shifter"). My catalytic converter is shot and my state doesn't emissions test (heh, heh). Are your pipes all welded or are they bolt-on? In your case, what would happen if you replaced that smaller muffler between the rear and front with straight pipes? I can't believe it muffles that much sound.

Thumbs up

Paul and Flint,

I will try to add link to some photos of what I did with my '83S Euro. I had to have a cat to pass emission tests in the Portland area. My car already had headers and the cat had been removed. I opted for an entire exhaust rather then screw around trying to cobble something together from part stock parts and other misc. PO pieces. Here is what I ended up with.

It was made by Tom Cloutier

and here is how it looks installed.

By the way it is 3" pipe all the way back. I like the sound and the neighbors have not complained so I guess it is not too loud. It is very un-V8 sounding. It almost sounds like a V12. I hope this helps.

Sorry for the late response but I've been on vacation. The exhaust system I have has not been 'americanized'. It is the Euro factory original which 2 exhaust manifolds that bolt to a 2 inlet 2 outlet main muffler (where you would normally find the 'catastrophic perverter'). The rest of the twin pipe exhaust (2-1/4") is a single piece which clamps to the 2 outlets of the main muffler. After the main muffler there is a small intermediate muffler followed by the watermelon looking rear muffler. Each muffler has 2 inlets and 2 outlets. Nice pic's Flint. I'd like to stay with the twin pipe setup if possible as opposed to a single 3" pipe. I have thought about just bypassing the intermediate muffler with straight pipes but I'd hate to have it any louder that it already is (except when I'm at the track of course!).

Well, everything behind the resonator (muffler where the cat is on US cars) is the same as the '85-'86 US model. Exactly the same. So you could easily grab an entire "cat" back system from 928 International or someone, or Ebay, that's already in very nice shape. Then just bolt it on.

The resonator/muffler/cat replacement is harder to deal with since there aren't that many around. And it's hard to find a dual in/dual out muffler to stick in there.

The factory exhaust is pretty nice, and was very carefully designed. It never presents more than 1-2 psi of backpressure to the engine. And the car sounds nice with the factory Euro system, but it's not super loud. Hard to improve on it, in my opinion.

Bryan
