Question Dash brake light

On my 82 928 everytime that I start it the brake warning light pops up and then I hit the brake once and it goes away. I did replace the master brake cylinder and it came with new switches. The level has not changed in the reservoir. Any suggestions?

Isn't this proper operation? I believe mine does this, too. Light comes on until you press the brake. Just a safety thing, I guess.

This is definately correct operation. The Owner's manual specifies this is how it is supposed to operate.

Thanks Mike and Erik. I'm going to read the manual right now. I have not even driven this car a single mile yet. Tonight we weld the new front end on. And then the hood, and fenders go on over the next couple of weeks. And yes.. I have pulled the brain and I will disconnect the battery strap and I will also pull the ECU out of the front before we weld. I also have an exhaust leak. I want to just pull the cat, front muffler and rear and build my own. Is this possible? Or do I need at least one resonator. And is the front muffler also the resonator? I am not educated on the 928 exhaust system. I have read on this board about building a RMB for early models. I will do that just for the sound and weight reduction. Any suggestions?

Yep,
Thats the way its supposed to be. You can't check to see if the bulbs are OK until you energize them - so it tests them when you first press the brake pedal.

My 87 928S4 gives me a Stop Light warning every time I start it. Tap the brake and it goes away.

When I first got the car there was a burned out backup bulb that I thought was the source of the warning light. When the message continued to come on even after the bulb was replaced I thought there was a short somewhere.

Is this the warning light being discussed? If so, you just saved me a continuing case of the crazies..trying to track down the source of the "short"...and no, it never occurred to me to read the manual..duh!

I hope Ed doesn't see this discussion.

If he does, you'll surely be admonished to READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL !

Obviously, good advice.

Now what about my exhaust question that I have in this thread? Any suggestions/thoughts?

Cool

-I think that most all Porsches have the "Bremslicht" light that illuminates until you tap your brakes. It is a standard practice in general aviation to tap your brakes as soon as you pull out of your parking place to confirm they work.

A former roomate of mine had a 911 that also had a brake light that illuminated until you tapped the brakes- perhaps this is a corporate thing. I've had several VW's and now the shark that keeps all the dashboard lights illuminated until I rev the engine above 1800 rpm...apparently the alternator needs to be revved like this to get itself activated. Anyone know why?

-Chucker, as to the exhaust, the rules that apply to all exhausts apply to your shark. Lower restriction generally frees up a few horsepower at the upper end of the tachometer, and since our V8's are generally tuned for high RPM, you can gain these free ponies by opening up the pipes. Now, I strongly stand by my opinion that catalyzers are needed, despite contrary opinions [and evidence] on the board. As to mufflers...my S2 has only a Borla muffler at the back of the car, and it is not too loud at all. It sings a nice song, but doesn't cause headaches after 450 miles trips either. A good "turbo" muffler and nothing else will suit you fine...I recommend dual pipes if you can. My car had a 3.5 inch exhaust when I bought it, with no cat and a turbo muffler and it was a little louder, but scraped the ground and hung down awkwardly.

Chucker,
You might want to check out the article in the new 928 Forum that covers the "X" exhaust pipe arrangement (dual joined/ported) - exactly relates to what you are interested in... discusses cats, alternate headers & pipe diameters too.

You have to subscribe to get it though...
