Exclamation Knocking Noise??

History:
I have just replaced my timing belt. I also replaced my front and rear gaskets and seals on my left side cam. I rebuilt my belt tensioner and bought a new rubber top for it.

Problem:
I had a knocking noise in my engine. It almost sounds like a clicking noise in the distributor. I timed the cam gears with the pulley and checked my firing order, it was all lined up. I thought it was the timing belt whipping against the covers. When I replaced the belt which was original and my car has 113,000 miles on it, thank god for having a 1979 928 , it still made a knocking (clicking noise). I also thought it could be a lifter, but don't want to take it apart until I know the problem.

It has been about 6 months since I drove it, and only got to drive it one day after I replaced my clutch and then my timing belt needed to be replaced. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> If anybody knows the problem please reply to this message.

Thanks alot,

Shawn

I've got a slight ticking noise coming from my engine as well. Last week two other shark owners popped their hoods for me. All 3 cars have the same clicking which I assume is the injector. I also assume it's not a cause for concern.

If I recall correctly, someone here (ah yes, 'twas Moss928) had similar symptoms that turned out to be a failed cam bolt.

My cam plugs, seals, retainers, bolts, and cover gaskets were all replaced about 2.5 years ago.

Shawn, Your car is old enough to have a loose cam bolt. I would have it checked. You do not want a failure. This is a big $ repair. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for all your help. I have found the problem. The gear on the end of the distributor was cracked and bent up making the gear in the cam push the distributor up and down.

I have ordered a new one from 928 International for $64.00, and should arrive tommorow. I hope this fix's the problem.

Thanks,

Shawn,
Investigate the reason for that cracked gear.
Any impact damage, may be dropped out of car, or is it just age and wear
