Other than brake lights warning that always goes out after touching the brake pedal. The ! goes out when I touch the dash ! light. This just started, car is an 85.

Are you sure that all of your dash warning bulbs are working as they should?

Left this out.
It's best to check them with the owners manual in front of you, that way you can see exactly what is supposed to be there.
My abs bulb was out, but my ! came on, took about 1 minute to find out what it was.

I just went out to the garage and all warning lights working normally. Starting temperatue seems to makes no difference. It is an odd thing, the car is as usual with this exception that doesn't seem to any effect. My brake pad light doesn't come on and my trailor <> lights don't come on; but I don't think either are supposed to.

OK, how many thins will trigger that "!" ... e-brake, brake fluid, brake test/pads, brake lights, tail lights... T Belt.., oil low, oil pressure, what else..?
Maybe we can do it by elimination of what it's not.

On my 86.5, the brake pad light shows along with the rest, with the key turned to 2. 85-88 have the same pod lights.
The trailer light does not have a bulb unless the trailer kit is installed, and has it's own circuit on the foil, not controlled by the CWS.
On my 81, when the alternator was bad, I would get the [!].

That was my thinking, everything apparently checks out, hence my post. Thanks for puzzling over it.

Have you checked your brake pads? My abs issue ended up being a grounding wire on the sensor broke off. It could be that the pad sensor is unplugged or just frayed.
