Default air pump vac line

I ran a search on this and found OB info but had trouble with S4 specifics. While doing the intake job I'm considering pulling the air pump and the canister seen in picture. Also all related smog plumbing. If I gut this equiptment what do I do with the vac line leading under the intake? Can it be capped off underneath? Are you guys removing this smog stuff? Thanks.

Ben

I'll be removing air pump plumbing from mine while piecing it back together. the air pump is toast and I'm past smog emission testing in NY state.

I've sealed these things in 2 unsophisticated ways.

1. Plug a vacuum line with an appropriate sized bolt covered in silicone sealer, and

2. beat a metal hose closed with a hammer and weld the end shut with a nice bead.

I don't know how to weld. Just watched dad do this around the farm. He couldnt believe I actually welded thin wall metal tube without burning holes in it. It is key to do this with no one around (sneaky) so if anything goes wrong, you can get no help. Oh, those lost days of my youth.

I expect to use more sophisicated methods during my 928 reassembly (yeah, right).

I removed my air pump a few months ago-

pretty straight forward thing to do, just make sure you have plugs (they are Porsche specific) for the plumbing in the back of the heads. these are plumbed internally to the exhaust ports. (if you have an extra set of junk heads, you can pirate the plugs off of them from the front side of the heads.)

as for the vacuum line(s), just plug it off where it connects to the throttle body. no big deal.

One thing to remember--on 16V engine, the belt that drives the air pump is the same one that drives the main engine fan. You'll either need a Euro air pump delete pulley assembly, or go to an electric fan set up of some kind (many available).

Russ,
IIRC there are no ports into the heads so what needs plugging?

Thanks Russ. I'm not seeing any plugs either? I'm 32v though. Looks like a simple job to gut the steel line leading to exhaust and cap it off as well as plug the vac line under the intake. Thanks for the input everyone.

Or get that NAPA belt that is sized just right to fit around the crank and fan pulleys without adjustment.

All of my cars air pump system is either sold, in the parts bin or garbage.

I did plug the vacuum line from the intake with the bolt/silicone method until I removed the intake this winter where I fully removed the vac line and plugged the vac source at the throttle body.

Sorry---referring to 16V heads. air pump pipes are routed to fittings in the rear of the heads, requiring plugs when removing the system.

32V plumbs to the exhaust----

Thanks Rog-

Looks like we're seeing the same thing. You completely eliminated your vac connection? Wow.

Thanks for the pic malcolm.

No worries.

Your pic shows 2 vac ports; my tbody has only 1 at the underside location but 2 on top:
