Question 98-S4 Fuse question

Hi - My cigarette lighter and accompanying light are not working. Therefore, I don't have any way to re-charge my cell phone when driving (Arrgh!).

Yesterday, I was replacing a fuse for my interior lights (20Amp #24), and while I was down there at the fusebox, I took a peak at my #2 fuse which goes to my cigarette lighter. I noticed that there was a wire coming out of that fuse position (and on top of that wire in the #2 spot was a fuse as well). At the end of the wire was a female fuse jack with another fuse of the same rating plugged into it.. (I can't recall the rating right now - I think it was green).

Anyway, This wire then leads off to somewhere under the carpet and toward the center console.
I tested both fuses and they both were okay.
But I am left with the lingering question, "why were the fuses for position #2 wired up in this manner?".

One other note, the rest of the fuse/relay box looked perfectly organized and not as though anyone ever screwed around down there. No Mickey Mouse stuff down there.. it looked like it was right by the book - except for the #2 position?

Any of you 928 Fusebox veterans have any ideas why someone would wire things up this manner on the cig lighter fuse?

Rob,

I don't have a S4 but someone can calrify if the S4 has an add-on to the #2 fuse. If not...

My guess is that something was added aftermarket to your car. The danger is that someone may have removed their add-on item and just left a dangling wire. This wire may be touching ground. Can you check the added fuse and the lighter #2 fuse? Are either/or bad?

If it were me, I would remove the add-on fuse and lkeave it out. Then replace the #2 fuse if it is bad. Also, check the value of the #2 fuse and be sure that it is the one specified. I checked every fuse in the panes against the fuse chart and found 5 fuses in my car which had been "upped" by someone in the past. This is not safe.

Once you remove the add-on fuse, see if anything electronic is not operating.

Note: consider the above opinion only is the S4 model did not have a factory add-on to the #2 fuse. A S4 person should be able to verify it.

Hi Greg,

the fuses that resides properly in the appointed slot of #2 is the correct type, and is functioning. The fuse that is located in line, on the wire coming off #2 is the same rating and works fine as well. Both were tested by me..

The only thing not working, as noted earlier, is my cigarette lighter and the accompaning light for it.

I may have to just trace this line, but I am pretty darn sure it goes to the cigarette lighter.

Thanks!

The wiring from fuse #2 (25 amp) should be Black w/ Yellow strip (unless changed by a previous wrench/PO). The ground return line goes thru a 6 pin connector located under the Passenger side of the Center Console, and returns to ground location #1.

The courtesy light is fed by the Interior Light circuit and is fed by a Black/Blue stripe wire directly off of the Clock 'back' light. The two circuits are not directly linked other than the ground return lines. btw - the courtesy light is an unusual style bulb, not readily found in my neck of the woods.

If the rest of your interior courtesy light work (i.e. the Lock button, AC button, etc.) - probably a problem with the 6 pin connector (or a feed problem).

You might check that the proper wires are in place and that continuity exists.

I found a replacement bulb at Pep Boys for my lighter - was surprised but it worked.
