Default '928' door sill design change?

I picked up from eBay a new (well the sticker says manufactured in 2000!) door threshold sill for the rhs (driver side for me in UK) of my 88 S4.

Just wanted to treat my car to a new one - I'm not planning any cool lighting effects! The 'tread' part is actually in amazing condition for a 20 year old car, but the clear '928' insert is pretty grungy.

I've searched posts and it seems straightforward to remove the old one (the new one has the metal clips and 4 of the white plastic rivets which slot into square recesses under sill).

What puzzles me is that the old one has a single black plastic rivet at the rear of the sill. The new one doesn't have any hole in the same location!

Just wondering if they did away with this rivet, or if it's some kind of manufacturing fault and I should drill a hole in the sill at that point to take a rivet?

Looking at the underside again I see there is another of the metal clips (which grip the sill edge) right on the curve at the back opposite where the rivet is on the old sill.

Maybe they simply decided another clip would hold as well as a rivet at that end area? At lease I have the hole in the sill where the original rivet went if it doesn't hold firmly there!

I saw them on ebay - Was actually tempted to bid! How much did they make?

Cheers

My GTS sill covers have the plastic rivet... the inserts are different (GTS vs 928) but the attachment is the same at the rear...

I have been through this too last year with my 83. I found with mine at the rear I had to relieve part of the end that cups the metal and part of the interior trim, or it would not sit flat there. I also found that if you are not careful with location front->back, the locating pin near the middle and its hole were visible through the clear section, which I didnt much like. Apart from that, it fitted fine, and doesnt move around. You can remove the old ones with minimum breakage by gently lifting the inner part that is clipped to the metal seam, along its whole length, get the locating peg out of the hole, and slide the whole thing outwards, off the white pieces . Putting new ones was a bit scary, considering their price and fragility...

For the record the factory rivet is a plastic piug with a plastic center pin. I have no idea how to get the plastic center pin out without pushing it down and though. Once the center pin is out the plug just pops out.

On installation I use a pop rivet. If you do not like the silver of the pop rivet it can be painted.

The inside of the threshold is secured by metal clips. But the front side has plastic clips. The proper way to remove the threshold is to pop up the inside edge and then slide the outside edge in towards the car. There is one hang up. About mid way on the outside edge by the clear letters is a pop in tab that needs to be pryed up. Once clear the threshold slides into the car by about an inch and then is clear.

The plastic clips for the outside of the threshold can be released by twisting them 90 degrees. On installation the plastic clips should first be put into the slots on the threshold, aligned with the holes and then pushed down into the holes. A rubber hammer with a little tapping works well.

I have not yet figured out how to get the plastic liners out of the holes for the plastic clips. Every time I have tried to remove them they end up breaking into bits and dropping into the rocker panel.

The plastic for the threshold is really crap. They look like crap after a while. There are dress up kits but the ones I have seen look like crap too. It would be great to get them stamped out if aluminum or stainless with 928 embosse in brass,

Any one care to make a run?

The new versions of the door sill dont have the rear rivet hole , new plastic factory rivets can be purchased, otherwise I wouldnt put in a metal rivet as it will most probably cause corrosion to start, if you do decide to use a metal rivet after match drilling your NEW sill for the rear hole I would use some silicone sealant on the rivet first. Just a note this is where corrosion seems to start on some USA cars, Dans removal process is correct the only thing i would add is to find the centing pin at the 928 portion of the sill pop it up first, then release the inner sill area then slide it into the car.

Instead of using the plastic rivet, you can just use a piece of trim tape to hold the door sill cover down in that area. This is what I recommend for those who install my stainless steel inserts, as those cover the rivet hole.

Hi Llew,

I got it for £50. Usually I check alternative prices for any Porsche bits I go for on eBay but only spotted this literally last minute so no time to check. In fact they are new for $90 at 928 Intl so may have saved a bit on the UK price. Looks lovely compared with old one though, but if I wasn't so lazy I suppose I could have used a perspex cleaner like Displex on the old numbers.

Thanks for all the tips and info.

Your knowledge of 928s is encyclopaedic! To think I asked about something as obscure as a sill plate.

I need to take the drivers door sill off EURO85 and install a new one that looks quite good (I got if from Mark Benton at The Nine Source...super fast shipping, very well packaged and a great price! Thanks Mark!) and I want to be SURE I do it right... In theory the removal of the old one hardly matters as the black bit under the "9" and "2" is broken, but I'd like to do it right and well just the same as eventually I'd like to add Paul Champagne's lighted sill kit to this car and maybe the '94 GTS as well...

I am looking for THE BEST installation instructions I can find! Dwayne have you done a full write up on this yet???? Maybe this will be my contribution if no one has done it at this point...I'll have to have my camera handy I guess! Still I'd rather Dwayne do it and then let me follow his lead! LOL!

James,

look at my lighted sill post and you will find a link to AO's post. Andrew describes the process in detail with pictures.

I will use the same instructions for our kits.

I started shipping the Lighted sill kits by the way. I will have an update post shortly and will contact those who have elected to be on the waiting list.

Paul
