it's alive! ALIVE i say!
i installed my factory VW wiper relay tonight. it works just like it does in my Jetta, straight 10 second wipe interval.
so then i installed the programmable relay. works just like it does in my Jetta. 3-30 wipe delay, set from the wiper stalk, instead of messing with the wheel under the dash. as Alan was saying, fumbling under the pod while you're driving in counter-intuitive. with the VW relay you do it without taking your hands off the steering wheel.
now i just need to get another one...

Congrats! Now, is this more difficult than changing a house light switch? If yes-or-no, how about a dummy's guide? Is the programmable relay also off of the Jetta?

Dave,
I went to your site and had a look at your car (very beautiful), but then I am biased because I have an '89 in Silver Metallic. I wish my nose of my car was as clean as yours is, paint wise. Mine has some clearcoat problems and until I get that taken care of, a bra will cover that up.
When I looked further on your site, I noticed the Stormbirds link. That is really cool. My other hobby is scale modeling and particularly Luftwaffe subjects. I can't wait to get my hands on that new Tamiya Me262. Oh well, that's for another board.
What wax do you use on your 928 ?

Here are a few links that might help. The first one is hard to read, so I copied it to word, then read it.
Looks like we're not the only ones doing this!

[i just copied thier text, easier than re-typing the exact same thing...]
Operation:
1.Turn the wiper switch to the intermittent position then turn it to off. The wiper will wipe once.
2.When you need the wiper to wipe again, you place the wiper switch to intermittent and leave it there. It will remember this time interval and repeat the wipe at this interval.
3.To change the interval, just turn to off (wiper will wipe) and then turn back to intermittent position to set the new time interval.
4.The relay is reset to a 6 second default interval when ignition is turned off.
as in the other post, the VW p/n is 1HM 955 531 B. should be around $40.
Donald-
about as easy as changing a CD. you need to know which relay is your wiper relay ( it moved around in different year groupings ). 928 Specialists has all the fuse/relay charts online.
you pull out your old wiper relay and plug in the new one. it's in there REALLY tight. the ralay is an optional VW relay, it didn't come on most cars. even we need to order it.
Robert-
thanks on the car. it's not as clean as those pics would lead you to believe. wax: Griot's Garage Best of Show, and Speed Shine between washing/waxing.
i'm not really into modeling, but i build a couple now and then. i have in work a Gruppe ( well, 3 ) of diving 1/32 Revell Stukas ( B models of course ) on the ceiling and a 1/24 MPC Stuka B that i haven't built yet. but i'm really into ****-era technology, mostly Luftwaffe ( that too is another discussion ), i have a small library of books, mostly aircraft and missles. other than Stukas, 262's are the ****e...
oh yeah, i went through all the diagrams and it looks like it should work on any year 928. YMMV - i don't guarantee anything. all rework on your own car is at your own risk...

Wow - Ancient history here - I can't belive this thread was started/'ended' so long ago. This intermittent wiper VW solution that David proposed & tested has been on my list of things to do for a while (a long while...).
Finally did it - quick visit to the VW dealer parts department and $64.80 later its alive!
I absolutely love it.. easiest swap out ever - pull one relay & plug in the other... of course I had to simulate rain.. and it turned out I needed some washer jet nozzle hose re-attachment inside the hood (again!). But now everything is up and running perfectly.
To recap: The silly wheel under the pod has been made redundant! Switch wipers to intermittent mode and they wipe once - repeats on a 6 second default delay. Want faster/slower - use the stalk to set the time... flick that stalk back to off and back to intermittent at the delay you want the wipers to repeat at. Easy to adjust, completely intuitive easy to upgrade - THIS IS WHAT I WANTED ALL ALONG!!.
Now for the rear wiper... humm
Alan
BTW the part number they used for mine was:
3B0-955-531 - I'd started with Davids number
Similar but not quite the same - maybe its been superceded. The VW part is only about half the height of the Porsche version. 1 less pin (for the Pot)

Alan - you've convinced me, I'm headed to the V-dub store tommorrow...
I've been thinking about swapping the headlight washer wire with the rear wiper wire.
I decided I didn't need a delay for the rear, but I'd like the trigger near my fingers instead of opening the sunroof - in the rain.
The wiper delay pot can be reused for an aftermarket automatic headlight delayed off timer!

PorKen,
Yep I understand. My beef with the rear wiper is twofold - you address one of them. I was in carwash (yes yes I know.. - but it was a touchless and it needed a clean badly). I was sat there part way through and thought - I should wipe the rear window to make sure its really clean - I'm reaching out for the wiper switch and as I'm about to press it I stop and look - my finger is on the sunroof open button - gulp !. I thought to myself - what dumb idiot allowed that ergonomic faux pas to exist - the active end of the wiper switch should be next to the close window/sunroof buttons. I thought aha! my PO must have reversed the switch because these clever Porsche engineers would never let that happen right?... Wrong. I guess we could always reverse the switch direction but the logo would then look odd
The other thing is I'd like an intermittent with a potentially long delay on the rear wiper too...also the three wipes thing every time seems like overkill, 2 wipes initially would seem plenty enough.
The way the VW intermittent relay works would be nice - except we only have a 1 way momentary switch for the rear
Alan
PS and then Nicole upped the stakes even more...

Volvo 850 owners seem to have the same concern. IPD sells a plug in relay for about the same price as the VW.

a project on the waiting list is to install a vw rain sensor. you turn on intermittant and it wipes once. it won't wipe again until the glass gets wet. adjustable sensitivity...

Alan - I found tonight that if you replace the rear wiper relay with a plain old horn relay, when you hit the button, it will wipe once and stop.
