Exclamation Missing bolt

I just found a missing bolt on the underside of my '85. I don't exactly know how to explain where it came from...but here goes. The bolt is one of two that hold on some sort of flat metal cover, diamond shaped, about three inches long. The cover goes over a hole just behind the underside of the engine, just before the two sides of the exhaust come together (sort of). Interstingly enough, on the underside of where this cover goes, there's a rubber stopper, sorta like the kind that goes in the hole in the underside of a piggy bank!

I'm headed to Lowe's/Home Depot now to find a match for the remaining bolt, and get this cover back in place. I haven't searched the manuals yet, but I plan to do so to find out what this is for. In the meantime, I thought someone might know off the top of their head...what is this cover for, and what trouble can it cause by being one bolt shy?

Thanks for any info...

It sounds like it is the cover plate for where the clutch slave cylinder would be located if you had a manual trans. The 'piggy bank stopper' you mentioned is the inspection port for the clutch release arm again if you had a manual trans. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, sounds like the right spot...that's probably it.

I did (finally) find the right bolts at Lowe's, so I've got the cover back on. Looks like it wasn't much of a problem anyway, but I feel better having things back in order.

That cover would be where you insert the flywheel locking device so you can 'break' free the Crankshaft bolt when removing the Crankshaft pulley (i.e. for Timing Belt replacement).

YOU FOUND THE SECRET!! Don't tell anyone, but that "piggy bank plug" is unique in the fact that if the owner removes it, all of the money that they have "dumped" into maintaining their car comes out that hole just like a piggy bank!

I wish.

Whoa! Then I've got to get a catch pan, pull that plug and wait for the money to drain! I've got more 928 stuff to buy!
