928 S potential
I have a 1983.5 928S and am wondering what speed and power potential it has. I am thinking of a supercharger, exhaust, chips, etc.. I need a real fast street car to handle the RX7 and comparable cars. I will be running it at import challenges and need to bring the German pride.

Brett ..I am thinking you bought the wrong car . There are no chips , no proven simple bolt on supercharger , modest gains from exhaust . You can spend thousands of dollars and not have 300 HP which in a 3,400 lb car will not be quick . At the altitude you live (over 6,000 ft )you probably can barely smoke the rear tires . The USA 80-84 engine was designed more for emissions than performance it burns regular gas and is only about 284 cubic inches . As a vehicle to show case a speed shop ?? would it not be better to use a car which more people own and hotrod ? If one out of every 1,000 928 owners in the U S bought something from you ; you would have maybe 25 customers ! The $350 dollar per month WRX with $1,000 of exhaust modifications will smoke you especially at a 6,000 feet elevation . You need to rethink your game plan / business plan .
The 928 is my brothers car. he is going into the business with me. I have the 951 and I am going to put in the MAP kit this weekend along with other mods and I will be real fast. Along with these two cars we will have a supercharged VW golf. We have already got quite a bit of attention from the demographic we will be selling to without one of "their" cars. In colorado there are hardly any speed shops and there is a growing race scene. I think the 928 will be a good tool for us because it will show we can deal with a higher end benz/bmw/porsche as well as the hondas/mazda/toyota/mitsus. We will be selling to the euro and japanese drivers. I know we aren't going to have a million 928 guys come into the shop, we are just showing that we are capable of modding the 911 and 944s out there. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

This is Brandon, Brett's brother. I have an '83 928S with about 80000 miles. It is in geat shape but has a few small problems. There are some small electrical problems with the climate control and the rear windshield wiper. It also needs new synchro gears in 2nd and3rd. Oterwise it runs strong and has many new parts. New clutch, brakes, battery, alternator, and firebraid plug wires. I am looking to get about $9,000 for the car because I think it has a lot of potential if someone would put some money into it. I think for about $11,000 total the car would run like new. Let me know what you think. I need some extra money to open our shop and would otherwise keep the car. My number is 720.339.1807 if you have any questions about the coming shop or the car. Thanks

Brandon, I hate to say this but you probably won't get 11k for an 83. The best thing you can do is fix the gears and keep it. Wait till the market rises (which it has been steadily). But if your in a the need for greenbacks - put her in the Auto Trader or Ebay.
Good luck with your speed shop.

Brett-
Now here's what y'all need to do. Go and order yourself the biggest, gaudiest rear wing you can find [biplane if possible], then remove ALL mufflers from your car and add an exhaust pipe 5 inches wide to the tip. Buy and mount the wildest wide-body kit you can find, and invest in a $6000 hand-rubbed Imron paint job. Make sure they paint a Porsche symbol on the hood that goes from the windshield to the tip of the nose. Now, mount some 20 inch chrome wheels and wide [I'd try 275 width front and at least 315 width on the back....] tires. Finally, go on down to Best Buy and fill your car's hatch up with speakers and amplifiers so that the license plate vibrates to the point of invisibility as you go down the road.
The engine? Don't do anything to it- don't even clean it. In fact, I recommend that you "conveniently" break the hood release handle so that you can't show the engine to anyone. Tell anyone that asks that you've an 8.0 liter twin-turbo V12 under the hood. They won't know any better anyway.
-Park THIS monstrosity in front of your shop. You'll do fantastic business with the kids.
Normy!

Not to burst your bubble to badly but, the 928 you describe is a $6000 car on its BEST day. They ALL have potential if the buyers wallet is thick enough.
For $9000 I would be shopping for an 85-86 32V with the new trans that doesn't have the synchro problems.
Good Luck
