Unhappy AM Radio

I installed a JVC radio with the CD unit plug in. The CD went well and the radio with the FM works fine. It is just the AM that is ragged hard to get to work. Can some genius with radios give me some advice?
Thanks

I forgot to add that I also have a 99 Cadillac Catera (Opel) that has the same problem.

This might seem too obvious, but is the antenna hooked up?

Usually you can receive local FM stations without any antenna, the reception will not be great, but if the stations are powerful enough and nothing is in the way, you might not be able to tell. But ... in order to get the AM stations you will require an antenna. Check connections at the radio end and at the antenna end.

AM works off the ground of both you deck and you ant. FM can care less about the ground. You have the ant. in your windshield? or a power on rear fender? I would check those grounds first and see if AM gets better. The windshield ant. is a little hard to check, there is a plug where the and cable meets the windshield, check that also.
