Post IS THIS 928S4 PRICE RIGHT?

HELLO I'M ABOUT TO PURCHASE A 1990 PORSCHE 928 S4 FROM EBAY. THE WINNING BID WAS $9500. THE CAR HAS 83000, AUTOMATIC TRANS. RADIO NOT WORKING, A FEW CRACKS ON DASH BOARD, EVERYTHING ELSE SEEMS TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE, ACCORDING TO OWNER. WHAT DO YOU THINK ON THE PRICE?

History: Car was in California all it's life except for 94 an95 when it was in Oregon. I purchased it from an Estate 12 months ago. I do not have receipts for prior to my ownership. I have put less than 500 miles on it since.

Repairs: The repairs I did was front brakes, drivers door handle replacement and a minor service.

Smog certification: The car was smogged about 8 weeks ago passing easily.

The front seats are as good as the rears seats, Email me for photo. headliner is very good.

Factory radio non-op. A new CD player will be the best route to go.

16" Tires are in good to fair condition. approx. 50% life left.

Damage: no body damage.Vehicle had original paint when I purchased it with no body damage at all except for a paint scrape at left corner of rear bumper. there were also paint scratches on the clear coat. The paint is nice now.

This car is beautiful and in very goodmechanically condition.

Please contact me if you have further questions. Thanks

Well…personally…because that it’s been repainted and it’s only a 90 model year…and he really doesn’t state as to why for the repaint…I’d probably pass but then that’s just me. Unless they are much older then that…I prefer original paint.

The price is about right for a car in that condition. Sounds like it’s sat out in the sun with the dash crack…also…wonder what the rear quarter panels look like.

Any maintenance records? Better check that now or pay later…Get a PPI done and DO NOT rely on his inspection report but you probably know that…get your own compression check done…maybe a leak-down AND…I’d also be worried about proper coolant changes having been done…lack of eats away at head gaskets…I KNOW THIS ONE PERSONALLY.

Just looked at EBAY…a few nice cars for not much more…

I’d say $9500 for the car and another $6K to $7K to get it right but then…I haven’t seen the car myself.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Since the car is in Calif. make the purchase conditional on a Devek inspection. You'll know the straight scoop when they are done. I did this prior to bringing my 86 car up to Canada, and the import inspection matched Lucky's report, to the letter!

The airbag warning could be a grounding problem. I've had this twice. You have to take it to a Porsche dealer or a mechanic who has the right electronic tool to read the error code, fix the problem, and reset the computer. It cost me $180 last time.

Be prepared to sink some money into that car. If it hasn't gotten a timing belt and water pump recently, I'd do that first - even if it's just a preventive measure (if it breaks, you'd have to spend more on the engine repair than the price of the car).

Secondly, at that age you might see any of the following issues (if they have not been fixed already):

- Worn shocks
- Worn motor mounts, and possibly leaking oil pan gasket
- Leaking velve cover gaskets
- Idle regulator going out (replace knock sensors and TPS at the same time)
- Leaks in AC, and/or defective heater valve

Be prepared to spend a few thousand $$$ to get the car back into perfect mechanical condition. Then you can focus on making it look good. You might be able to find a used instrument pod from one of the big three:

- DEVEK (devek.net)
- 928 International (928intl.com)
- 928 Specialists (928gt.com)

Where in CA are you located? If you are in the Bay Area, take the car to DEVEK/DynoTECH in Belmont. If you are in SoCal, we've heard great things about Precision Motors in Anaheim.

Best of luck!
