Default Diagnosing a constant Whirring, Buzzing electrical sound from passenger Rear

Hi folks,
Can someone give me advice on this? Hoping to figure out how immediate the problem is.
Yesterday coming in from Stinton Beach, a sound from the rear right/passenger side started and followed me all the way home.
0. 1984 928S
1. It seems to be coming from the area where I think the fuel pumps are?
2. It is a constant whirring/buzzing noise, medium pitched, as if an electrical motor is stuck in the on position.
3. It seems electrical, because when I push on the window-up buttons, the sound fluctuates higher/lower pitched.
4. The sound does not change based on car speed or revs.
5. Everything else seems to be working properly, all dash gauges reading normal.

Im wondering whether they might be a fuel pump noise? Or a solenoid?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Jaime

I would guess FP. Jump the relay and go stick your head by the pump and see if that is it.

It is the fuel pump - that happened to me in my 84 once. I panicked thinking the worst, and all I needed to do to fix it was to add gas. How low was your tank when you started hearing the noise? Mine was at about 1/8 tank or so.

fill your gas tank. Keep it full.

Thanks.
Tank was 3/4 full though...strange.
Maybe a fuel filter needs changing, the pump is starving, and gas isnt moving through the lines?
But the car is running fine. I drove it home for another 30 miles.
Would the fuel pump noise mean it needs replacement? But wouldnt the fuel pump just die, rather than make these dying sounds? :-)

The fuel filter should be on the top of the list to replace if you have recently gotten your car IMO. Also, I have heard of pumps making noise for years before they fail. I would buy another pump and have it on hand to replace when and if yours fails completely. Not sure if YMY has an internal pump as well, may wanna check on that. On my 85 there is only one pump on the outside and a screen filter on the inside of the tank that unscrews where the fuel line goes into the tank. This could be clogged on yours. In any case the replacement of the FP and FF and cleaning the screen is a relatively cheap and easy process in the event that your pump fails.

Sounds like the fuel pump. With it idling, go behind it and listen under the license plate. If it's the fuel pump you will know it immediately. I had to replace one in my old 928, got the new one from www.thepartsbin.com for a very reasonable price.

make sure that you replace the fuel filter if you install a new fuel pump . This is down the road info...... Back on topic
You might want to remove the rear cover under the right side rear of the car it will take a wrench and some PB blaster on the 2 10mm nuts to remove the fuel pump cover. Once this is done you will be able to see the pump and also if any of its mounts have come loose, check for leaks and any of the rubber mounts being sheared , and the fuel filter clamp being tight

Pull the pump cover and make sure that nothing under there (except one end of the rubber mounts) is touching the body at all - pump, filter, mounting plate, hoses...
