Post What the Heck!

She is acting up.

Brake pads on the way.
Pad sensors on the way
Fuses and relays on the way.
Tires sitting here awaiting installation, and alignment. Bad feeling on this one.
Almost finished with spoiler repair, again!

The brake light/ marker light short is iffy.
The trace on the console switch demons is underway.
Replacement of alternator cooler hose is iffy.
Motor mount replacement...later.
Just Big Footed the coin holder, pressboard backing looks sad.
AND NOW!
Was leaving work. Put it in reverse, backed up,
went to put it in 1st and either the 'T' handle or the slide plate locked up in drive...??????
I put it in neutral, reverse and park..smooth operation. Jammed in drive again. Played with the lock-out button, shifted while parked from drive to park and back several times watching the shift plate. Nothing I own could have slipped under the trim and above the plate to jam it.
Tugged a little harder and the T handle felt like it broke.
Pulled the boot and looked .
The T shifter has two slots, one on either side. The slide plate verticles have a round, plastic, tit that slides in the slots on the T handle, sort of a pivot point as the handle move forward and backwards. No problem to popping the **** back in the slots but its still jamming at drive.
If I apply the manly grip to the verticles I can shift to 1st or 2nd but not smoothly.
However, once I am in 1st or 2nd shifting to a higer gear is smooth.
Anyone BTDT?
She's ganging up on me all of a sudden, Help!

If that's the front spoiler in question, I feel your pain. The front ducts and spoiler were missing when I got it, and I just finished installing them this weekend - what a fight! In large part this is due to one fender being slightly misshaped in the area in question, after the first hour I was seriously wondering if the cursed thing would even fit. Though now it all done its just amazing how it transforms the look for the front end! Very pleased.

I had a similar problem a few monthes ago shifting into 2nd, and it just wouldn't do 1st at all. Baby was going to the mechanic for something else then, so had him take a look. Much to my relief, it was a non-critcle plasic panel under the shifter that had cracked and left a fragment jamming the lever. Since my machanic found and this, I can't be much more descriptive about what the thing looks like, perhapse some else here can. According to the wrench, the part isn't important functionally, often breaks in this manner on older cars, and if there is any warpage to the console area its likely to happen again. Must not take much warp since that's one of nicer parts of my interior. said he's had cars go through many of these parts, so its easiest to just remove it and leave it out.

good luck on the demon hunting

John,

Wiring harness for either of the four switches can be in the way. That's what got mine. I was able to remove the two side aft screws holding the rear of the console to the tunnell and lift enough to see and clear the wiring obstruction. I also found about $4 in change and a few other small items in there from the PO. These cars really do pay dividends!

Snow,
Perundel?
Zack, get the forklift and a dolly... we'll have to use the BIG dictionary.
Jessa,
Sorry to hear about the spoiler fender issue.
Pattycakes was kissed hard by a raisin -real old fellow- last summer in my doctor's parking lot.
The rasin was attached to the steering wheel of a sunburnt, 4 door, Oldsmomile 88 Delta Royale Broughm Delux -peeling of course-. A real River Queen, it was. The Dr. was running real late so I was in the lot waxing the sHARk.
I looked up and saw this enormous faded blue thing with a very frail looking man peering thru the steering wheel. After the assault... he backed up and gave his elderly wife of 100 years a look and with a "we'll get her in there this time, Margie" on his lips He dropped the beast in gear.
I suppose I'll burn in hell for screeching at him... but he did go away. The whole front end was displaced from left to right. That evening
while delving into the 928 INT'L catalog I heard this weird crunch/bong sound. AS I hit the door prepared to ream the kids I saw that they were about 150ft away, checked out Pattycakes ... every thing had popped back into place, fenders, hood, trim...everything. Only 2 minor warps on the right fender, a scrape of paint on the left front, and a cracked spoiler.
But the spoiler has never lined up properly on the right side since...
If you break yours try to repair it on the car.
If it is misshaped in the least it will bind/twist when you TRY to align the screw holes.
How's your leather?
Greg,
I think Your suggestion is the best so far...
I was messing with those switches!
Thanks all,
John S.

The front seat leather is very, very worn, with a hole on the left of the driver's seat from 20 years of people getting in and out. Back seats clearly never used and in great shape. Much of the rest of the leather is decent to good, but the car has all the classic symptoms of California sun-bathing; dash and pod damage, bleaching and waring around cargo area.
Back when it was new the local stereo shop had no trepidation about cutting holes for speakers, which has worked out well. The upper door panels have custom enclosers with 2 speakers each, very nicely done (At first I thought it was a factory install).
I hear Pattycakes' leather is very nice, are there pics?

Greg,
You are the winner of the custom color matched 'Dingle *****' window trim - Red, Right?
I pulled the wiper, sunroof, and left window switches again... fiddled with them and the shifter until it operated smoothly. Found one nice earring.
It was the left window wiring - the least suspect - even though the wires appeared to be heading directly left, then down. Must be more length to that bundle than meets the eye.
Have to pull the console side panels tomorrow - one of those little ball bearings from a rocker switch decided to play hide and seek. I can reach it with a telescoping magnet, but I need to look at the wire bundle routing and solder the O2 leads again anyhow ... Thanks again.
Jessa, All I can say about the leather is: we need to round up the Weissach people in directory form. Though not nice to talk about, I wonder how many of the Weissach models are still rolling or even sitting in a garage or lot somewhere. It has been said that the Weissach was targeted at the American Market, but you have to wonder how many of- what, 205 - of them actually got here. And of them, how many were attrited by wreaks and abuse.
For some reason nearly all of the Weissach sales on Ebay have been from the midwest and west coast.
Pattycakes leather is probably a 9+ out of 10.
No tears, honest! Some fine spydering is showing up though on the drivers seat. I keep large thick towels -folded thrice- on all of the seats and huge long sleeved cotton shirts on the up rights
-backs-. When I took her in for the body work the shop dragged her out into the sun for twelve days of roasting in the Texas sun. Read that high 80's to mid 90's -in the shade- with the windows up, and didn't use the shades.
I was horrified , figured the leather would sag and bag. Resulted in some fading on rear seat tops and rear window quarter.
I'm no purist, but that was criminal!
Back to Weissach parts ; we need to sign Weissach organ donor cards to keep these critters up.
Mine is 20 years old this month. I have pics but can't seem to upload maybe some will be posted from the SITO gathering later this month.
Couldn't bear to hack her for speakers, am still using the original fader, too.
Later,
John S. and Pattycakes

That will be fine THIS TIME, John, but next time, I expect nothing less that pink fuzzy dice!

Glad I could help, will do so anytime I'm able.

John,
I agree, it would be very interesting to see how many are left, and a good 'organ donor' network. (not like that kidney thief ledgend though... ) I'll bet PCA knows about a few, and we've seen a couple others posting to this board. Just need to get a few entries to get that directory going.
And despite all that's been done to my car stereo, the original fader is still in use.
