After recently putting on one of those RMBs I'd like to see if I can get more sound from the exhaust on this puppy
Perhaps the note that will wake the neighbors.
I was looking in a Jeg's catalog and I saw a number of different exhausts. I was wondering if anyone has tried bypassing even the intermediate mufflers on these cars as well as saying how it sounded. I will post the mufflers I am looking at in particular..

928 Specialists has this one with piping. This is the Flowtech Afterburner

Flowmaster Delta Force Race Muffler

Flowtech Purple Hornie Resonator...yup just resonators

Dynomax Magnum Glasspack. Once again...just a tube with holes
Also whats the stock size diameter of the piping on the '87 928 S4?? Is it 2 1/4"?????

I've got the full cat-back (or not cat-back, in my case) from 928 Specialists with the muffler you show (ooops - edit - apparently not, per DR below - but close enough). Piping is obviously different from the 32v setup, but same muffling.
Will wake the neighbors. When Jeannie sold it to me, she said "you do know this is going to be quite loud, don't you"? She was right.
However, the old ***-dynomometer has found a few ponies and at WOT the sound is heaven. At just off idle, there is a hint of American V8 to the note that I could do without.
Also quite useful as a diagnostic aid - without all the stock silencing, you can get a better idea of what's going on under the hood.
My $.928

I love loud. My 84S sans cat and a 20 yr old rear muffler wrinkles the house siding. You can keep it down, sorta, if you're paying attention when trolling thru neighborhoods, but on the gas toward the red, geez. What a beast.

Nope, we use Spintech Mufflers (www.spintechmufflers.com) in our systems, same performance and flow as a Flowmaster Race muffler, but better sound and MUCH less interior resonance due to it's unique design.
Here is a photo of the 3" version:

and of the 3.5" version :

Eurospec, I can vouch for the Spintech mufflers that Dr is talking about. He hooked me up with a pair about a year and a half ago, and I love them. I have them installed in the location where the intermediate mufflers normally reside, and I have an RMB. Comparison problems though are the fact that I'm running a set of MSDS headers, an X- style crossover and 2.5" pipes. Still, I love the sound of the Spintechs, and they fit fine with no clearance issues.

ok thanks for the tips! DR sorry about the misconception. I'll consider your spintechs as soon as I replace the cam cover gasket and timing belts. Thanks for the tips!
Check out the Avenger II system. It sounds great, and very well made. Mine uses a MagnaFlow muffler and a high flow cat.

Euro,
I know that you want loud but....
After much experimentation and assist from my bro in law (a welder).
We went thru the 2 1/2" - 3" range.
Eventually, I settled on a 2 1/2" system, High Flow CAT, 15 " Flowmaster. I wanted the 18" Flowmaster, but room in general, and input/output pipes were located backwards for my application.
With this system even God get's annoyed after a while. Loud...NASCAR LOUD! Fun at first. Every cop, and every street racer in the county has your number in no time at all. No longer fun.
We have the noise police running around with decible meters here in Midland so I know your cops have them.
When the Big Boss starts glaring at you across the parking lot, or your neighbors rent a Backhoe and start digging a monster hole in that vacant lot down the street take it as a not so subtle hint...
I put a long tube trush pipe similar to your pics. of the glasspack and purple horny. The Trush
models have different levels of restriction, mine was sort of medium.
As Dr Bob said there is some body resonance with the large tube dia. systems. When I added the Trush the resonance disappeared. I still turn heads just not in the next county.
Before the trush the sound was deafening... music was a wish and you had to shout at the passanger.
Do what you will, but when the fun wears off, believe me, you will cut back on the Db's.

No biggie, common mistake.

BTW, I higly recommend that anyone with an 87-up that is planning to go into the cam covers to always replace the inexpensive oil pressure check valve componenets in each head. We have recently found excessive wear of these components in as low as 50k miled 928s.
This is easy to do, here are the part numbers for your reference.
N.025.669.2 Oil - Check Valve in Head - Ball - 87-95 $0.68
928.104.119.01 Oil - Check Valve in Head - Guide - 87-95 $10.06
999.701.654.40 Oil - Check Valve in Head - O-ring - 87-95 $0.77
999.218.035.02 Oil - Check Valve in Head - Pin - 87-95 $3.16
928.104.121.00 Oil - Check Valve in Head - Seat - 87-95 $2.00
928.104.129.00 Oil - Check Valve in Head - Spring - 87-95 $0.35

Hey hey...muffler question. Well I have a Cat-bypass on 2.5" pipes to a Flowmater 40 Series Delta Flow. It sounds LOOOUUUUDD! I get a lot of compliments from people. What kind of engine do you have? V8? And believe it or not...police officers (I work next to a donut shop) even ask and compliment.
I would go with the 50 series as they are quieter than 40.
Flowtech muffler look promising. I've seen it on a Mustang at Auto-Xs here locally, those are loud too. They do have a deeper tone than Flowmaster.

new piping is expensive for a cat back 928 muffler, i'd like to just buy 2 muffler parts and weld them up. After all, 2 1/4" exhaust diameter is excellent for a stock car.
I did the same with my 944, but i upgrade to 2.5" for cat back. However, I'd like to keep the 928 at 2 1/4" but I want something throaty and loud similar to a 350 small block. I've heard a 928 once with a sound just like it! an S4 in fact witht he same motor (nope no Chevy sacriligious conversion ) I never got the chance to find out what kinda exhaust it had. But I know if I change the intermediates that I will get good sounds.
Andrew you mentioned flowtech, and John purple hornies. I don't think I"ll get the resonators, but rather a muffler. But i don't want sacrificed flow. Would a Flowtech sacrifice flow compared to stock????

I just looked at a picture of the S4 intermediate mufflers and they are offset in and offset out. So, it looks like I may have to go with resonators. But I will keep looking until i find a reasonable muffler. If not, then i'm feelin Hornies!!!
Unfortunately, dad doesn't want the car too loud...but this is coming from a guy who ran a '66 Chevelle with a 396 and a Holley Dominator with over 580 RWHP.

ok not to be flooding, sorry if I am....
But, what about Borla!?!?!?!? They sell universal fit mufflers like this one in Jegs! I'm sure that it would sound really sweet on the car! and it's only for 104.99 a muffler!!!!
Cheap compared to a 928 exhaust system!

Borla Universal Fit Muffler 2 1/4" offset in,center out. 14"X4"
